Who’s the Man?
After a couple of week layoff following the birth of my daughter, I’m back in full force this week. I noticed that Chad posted the question polling your opinion about who should be the Super Centex Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
Guess I’ll follow his lead — and that’ll be a first — and do the same with the guys.
Here are a handful of Player of the Year candidates. I won’t reveal the Trib’s choice yet, but I’d be interested to hear who some of you local hoops fans would choose. (Even if your choice isn’t one of those listed).
D’Andre Simmons, Jr, F/G, 6-4, Connally: 13 ppg, 15 reb, 5 ast, 4 stl, 5 blk; 48% FG; 17-3A defensive MVP; 2007 Super Centex newcomer of year
Cameron Blenden, Sr, F, 6-3, Crawford: 22.4 ppg, 10.96 reb, 1.9 ast, 2.3 stl; 21-2A MVP; shot 55% on 2-pointers, 40% on treys; chosen for 2 all-star games
Tre Nichols, Sr, G, 5-11, Killeen: 19.3 ppg, 3.4 reb, 4.5 ast, 4.1 stl; 76.3% FT; Texas State signee
Tralyn Harden, Sr, G, 5-10, Itasca: 25 ppg, 7 reb, 3.5 ast, 3.3 stl; made 128 treys at a 40% clip; 85% FT; three-time district MVP, two-time Super Centex honoree
Drew Pollard, Sr, P, 6-3, Walnut Springs: 22.3 ppg, 15.7 reb, 4.8 ast, 6.7 stl; unanimous District 26-1A MVP; unanimous selection to Texas Six-Man Coaches All-Star Game; picked for 2 other all-star games

How about Brandon Irwin, Sr, G, 6’2”, Thorndale. Top player and leader on a team that went 36-1 on the season, two time TABC all-state player, State Tournament MVP, possible class A division I player of the year. 22.5ppg, 6.6 stl, 4.9 ast, 4.7 rebounds, 80% FT percentage, 64% 2FG percentage, 41% 3FG percentage. Statistical leader and floor leader for defending A DI champions.

Nice input, Franklin, but Brandon Irwin wouldn’t be eligible for Super Centex recognition, given that Thorndale isn’t in the Tribune-Herald’s coverage area.
