Hall of Fame Banquet is Huge Success
We had a very nice Hall of Fame banquet this last Saturday night. Inductee Jose Flores was complimented by Jimmy Generals as someone who never gives up and always gives his best on the lanes. David Bilheimer presented Jose for induction. The food was great and a good time was enjoyed by all..I would like to personally thank Janet Faulkner and Stan Patrick and committee for all the hard work and overcoming the challenge of having the Hewitt VFW double booking and having to move the site to the Robinson Chamber at the last minute.. Great job guys and congrats to Jose……

Cheetah Pattern Completed
I’ve heard it said that there is no defense in bowling. Not entirely true. The invisible oil on the lane is your foe. The Cheetah pattern is the shortest at 36 feet. With 24 feet of backend, the ball has plenty of space to react. My experience on this pattern had a fear factor to it. Playing straight up on the edge of the gutter. I was just trying, at first, to keep it outside the 5 board. I started using a Hammer Black Widow Pearl, this was good for 3 games and the 4th game I used a Hammer Blue Vibe. Both have aggressive drillings and the Vibe was polished for extra length. Yeah, I did drop some in the ditch. I am finding that keys to these PBA patterns is more the bowler than the ball. I had to make a concentrated effort to relax and focus, but that’s just bowling anyway. After the learning curve, and practicing the basics I was taught, my scores started rising up to my regular league average in the upper 180’s. My last series was a must 800+ series to get there with an 805 for 4 games. Next is the Chameleon pattern. I plan on using a Hammer Black Widow Bite and playing inside the track area. Hey, Roger, Tucson sounds like a real sport bowling town. Can you put up some hints about how to play the Chameleon?

Sport Bowling- Dead or Alive
This is a spinoff/follow up to “USBC Recognizing the Real 300”. The bottom line on that one is the national tournament is promoting a sport shot, then give out the sport honors, no matter the membership level. With that said and out of the way—— a couple of months ago, I was given a hard sell to join a travel league. I said NO. I did not want to bowl in a different house with what I could get at home. Then I said to count me in if you find a sport league, feeling confident I would not be bothered again about a travel league. Well, I was “hung by the tongue”. A group of us were going to bowl in a PBA experience league on Sunday in Austin. During the meeting, the manager of the center came in to announce that there would be a league, but there would be no sport shot. Over half the potential bowlers, including us, got up and left. We did not give up the search for challenge. We found a PBA experience league in Georgetown, just an hour away from Waco, and very well worth the trip, (WOW) at the new Mel’s Lone Star Lanes. The bad news, it is scheduled on Wednesdays and we need one person to go with us and fill a team. This month is the Cheetah pattern. I’ve done my homework— wish me luck! I don’t know if I am looking for punishment or a challenge—- probably both.

Is USBC Recognizing the Real 300?
I have some problems! Correct me if I am wrong on anything about this, I need some serious feedback on this topic. One problem is, that I have not yet bowled a 300 perfect game, that’s my problem. Now, if you bowl a 300 in your regular league, city tournament, or state tournament— you get a ring in recognition of your achievement— very nice. But wait, there is a 300 ring you may not be aware of. It is a “sport 300 ring”. How do you get one of these? Think bowling on a sport shot gets you one of these special rings? Oh, no no no. You have to $$$ upgrade your membership in addition to bowling the honor score on a sport shot. This is not possible in Waco, there is no league certified for being a sport league and the two bowling centers in Waco are not certified as sport bowling centers. So where do we Waco bowlers go to bowl on a sport condition? This year USBC has promoted the national open tournament in Albuquerque, NM (and all future national open tournaments) as being a sport shot. Those of us that go to nationals, this is the only time we will see a sport shot. It’s tough, it’s hard, you have to combine consistent speed, accuracy, you have to pay attention to how your pins fall to make adjustments to your ball path. You deserve a sport ring for bowing 300 on a sport condition! Not entirely accurate, according to USBC. At the national tournament you are given the opportunity to $$$ upgrade your membership there, before you bowl. Otherwise, a 300 gets you a ring you could get in league play. This is my problem!! Our national governing body, that promotes recognition for achievements is putting a higher price on it. It’s a sport shot, the only ring at the open national tournament should be the sport ring—- no matter the membership level. (Note: 31 people bowled 300 at nationals, appx. 63,075 bowlers.)

Jack Henson 1 Perfect Game
It wasn’t pretty but it was fun to watch. In our 4 game format in the Wednesday Trio at Lake Air Lanes, Jack Henson shot a 300 in the last game. All evening long I watched Jack make several shots, where after the release, he would seem to “stare” down a pin for a strike. In his 300 game, after 11 in a row, strike number 12 was no different. Looked like a good release, on target, hits the pocket, —- ten pen still standing. But wait, what looked like a 4 pin, lazily rolled around to the ten pin, touched it just enough to take it off the pin deck before the pinsetter came down. Great bowling!! After the series, Jack said that this is his first 300 since we merged in to the USBC and will be getting a plaque commemorating the accomplishment. Jack Henson is a Life member of the Greater Waco USBC Association and a member of the Hall of Fame.

Bill Sanders..Chris Vargas Shoot Big
In the Monday Challenge opening night this week at Lake Air Lanes Bill Sanders dialed up some big scores shooting games of 236..277…247..for a nice 760 series..Bill, an accountant here in Waco already realizes that he just set an opening average of 253 and will have to try to maintain it through out the league..Good Luck Bill..you are one on the very short list of bowlers in Waco who can carry that high of an average…. ALSO..on the same pair that night, Bill’s son in law Chris Vargas shot games of 223..214…267 for a real nice 704 series….Can you imagine the conversation around that family dinner table..
Way to go Guys and keep up the high scores…….
