Not Invested in Nu-Michael on General Hospital

I have to say, I just can’t get into Michael Corinthos III waking up on General Hospital.

It’s because Michael - the Michael who we have seen on our TV screens for years growing up before our eyes - is now magically tranformed into a bigger, much older and totally different Michael.

TPTB fired the loveable, kid that we watched for years - Dylan Cash - and hired an older version.

It’s called SORAS (Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome) and is done on a lot of soaps.

But, in some cases, it just doesn’t work.

And, in this case, I’m not feeling it.

Dylan Cash was 13 when he got the axe, not that far from the age that this Michael is supposed to be - somewhere in his teenage years.

So when I see Carly (Laura Wright) crying through a soliloquy over the comatose new Michael, I don’t feel sad like I would if it were Dylan Cash lying in that bed.

I don’t feel anything.

So WHY couldn’t they just use Cash, someone who we all watched grow up onscreen since the time he was 7 years old.

I think it makes everything so much more credible and makes the audience so much more invested in having a young actor/actress stay in the role that they originated.

Cases in point: Kristin Alderson and Eddie Alderson on OLTL and Kimberly McCullough on GH.

Nu-Michael is newcomer Drew Garrett.

I don’t have anything against this young actor, don’t get me wrong.

He probably is a very good, capable actor.

But, for me, he’s just not Michael.

He’s not the kid who I watched grow up before my eyes and became attached to over the years.

Michelle I have to agree with you. Although I’m a little behind on GH these days the only thing that interests me about this storyline is what Sonny’s gonna do about Claudia, how the truth will affect Jax/Carly and how Jason handles all of this.

They should’ve just brought back Dylan Cash & as you said nothing against this newbie, but I’m currently invested in all of the wrong part of this storyline. Michael waking up is kinda an afterthought and it should be a lot more than that.

I never really liked Dylan that much…cute kid, but when he had a storyline, he was pretty obnoxious. I’m giving the new kid a few weeks awake before I form an opinion of him.

Oooh ITA that Dylan’s version of Michael was extremely obnoxious. But that’s not surprising since he was raised by Carly, Sonny & Jason LOL!

Hi Sally :) I def understand what you are saying about giving nu-Michael a fair shake. Absolutely! And I’m sure he is a good actor and, in time, we will all be readjusted to the switch. I guess I was invested in Dylan because I watched him grow up onscreen and became attached to him as Michael.

I also agree with Kimi that the only part of that s/l that I’m interested in is what’s gonna happen when Sonny gets confirmation of Claudia’s part in Michael’s shooting!

I’ve been watching the show and think the nu-Michael is doing a great job. He is older and has more of a story line. Let’s give him a chance-I’m sure he’ll be great!

Hi Mink, I wrote the blog before Michael emerged from the coma and was just lying there. At that point, I couldn’t get into the change of actors. But, I have to say, since Michael has woken up, I have really enjoyed Drew as Michael.
