Let’s Chat and Read too…
'ONE BOOK, ONE WACO'
I’m Allan Marshall, and I hope we can have a wireside chat.
I’m passionate about education, the town-gown relationship, and what we can do together to make a difference in our community. I invite you to leave comments, questions, and concerns that you have for me. I value your input and your suggestions.
On another note, we restarted the community-wide reading program, One Book, One Waco, and we selected Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore as the community book for Spring 2008. It is a great story about an unlikely friendship: an international art dealer and a homeless sharecropper.
So, let’s chat and read too…I look forward to hearing your responses from the questions below.
Two questions:
- What are your thoughts about our selection?
- Have you had a an unlikely friendship that you would like to chat about?

I have not yet read “Same Kind of Different As Me,” but it will diffently be a priority for me this Christmas. Promoting literacy is lifetime pursuit of mine. In fact, 8 out of 14 of my relatives will be getting books from me for Christmas. I’ve volunteered in schools by reading selections from popular literature and buying quality books for classes. How can I be involved in One Book, One Waco?

That’s “definitely” a priority. We all need to work on our literacy!

If WISD had just ten teachers like Allan Marshall then our TAKS scores would soar to the heavens. Great Blog. God Bless teachers like Allan Marshall who are truly passionate about teaching. And may our society wake-up and start paying teachers much, much, much better.

Fred,
Thanks for your comments. However, I am not a teacher; I work for the Chamber. I do love discussing education and currently work at the Chamber to connect the business community and the education communities. Keep the chats coming.

It’d be nice to see folks from the chamber at my school, GL Wiley Middle! We have been working hard to give the students a reason to strive for success. What they need more than ever is the see the community, locally and at large support them by showing their faces on our campus, at a sporting event, or as mentors. You’d be surprised how when these kids see the community cares, their level of care will increase.
We’re having Career Day this Wednesday and I am hoping and praying that those who volunteer to come speak to the students about their careers will make an effort to show their faces on campus throughout the year.
Keep the students, their families, teachers and staff in your prayers. We are working hard! Looking forward to seeing you at GL Wiley Allan.

Thanks Mary. I appreciate your comments, and I welcome any opportunity to get involved at G.L. Wiley. We are currently engaging students at G.L. Wiley with our LEAD program, which is a mentoring program between business leaders and students. Also, our Chamber had a board meeting at G.L. Wiley. Let me know of other ways to get involved.
