Mommy and Me opportunities — on weekends? We need ideas

I had an interesting email from a reader this week. She’s running into some of the same situations I did when my son was younger. There were the occasional events on Saturdays at Ollie Mae Moen (the Mayborn’s precursor, that’s how long ago it was), but not much else a working mom and her child could do together.

Here’s an excerpt from the reader’s email. Can anyone help with ideas?

I am a working mom and can’t do swim lessons, dance, music, gymnastics, etc. classes with my 2-year-old on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 10 which seems to when EVERYTHING is. Do kids of working moms not get to do any of this fun stuff? If I can find some thing that is in the evning it starts at 5:00 or 5:30, which I still can’t make as I am not able to pick my daughter up till 6 due to work.

I was just looking for things for my boys to do this summer, with swimming lessons at the top of my list. I live outside of the Waco city limits but work in the city limits. That makes it even harder to find something that I can take the boys to when I get off work. I’m very eager to see responses to this blog. C’mon people!! RESPOND!

I have a 2 1/2 year old son, so if you find something please post it. Every “Mom & Me” even seems to happen during the day. We go to the park a lot and the Mayborn Museum on Thursday evenings (they stay open until 7pm on Thursdays).

Sara,

Oh, yeah, I remember lots of time at the park. When my son was young, my husband did freelance from home and stayed home with him while I worked (mostly nights then) at the Trib. They got to know the parks pretty well. By the time the weekend rolled around, there wasn’t a whole lot to go do that a little kid can appreciate (or handle).

Good idea on the Mayborn on Thursday evenings! Thanks.

Taking your kids to feed the ducks at the River Walk is not only enjoyable for the children but for parents as well. The good thing about it is that is cheap. Buy some bread or crackers and “Viola”…an inexpensive activity that is fun for the whole family.

Keep an eye on the Waco CVB event calendar http://www.wacocvb.com/events/ for things like:

4/5 MCC Theater presentation of The Phantom Tollbooth 4/12 World Hunger Relief Spring Farm Day http://www.worldhungerrelief.org/

Baylor baseball, softball, tennis, concerts, etc.

Or classes at the Art Center Waco http://www.artcenterwaco.org/classes.htm

And the YMCA offers swim lessons in the evenings.
