UPDATED AGAIN: Clinton campaign to host primary countdown party in Waco today
Hillblazers, as the campaign likes to call them, will celebrate the opening of Hillary Clinton’s Waco campaign field office Thursday at 6 p.m.
The office is located in a strip center with a Carpet One store at 401 Lake Air Dive, about a third of a mile north of Waco Drive. It will serve as the nerve center for Clinton supporters in Waco, providing campaign materials and nightly phone banking sessions.
UPDATE 4 p.m. Wednesday: A Clinton campaign spokesman tells me that a mariachi band and a taco truck will be on hand at the “countdown to primary night” party on Thursday. He said the field office has been open since Tuesday. For those with questions or want to get involved in the campaign, call 751-1267.
UPDATE 10 a.m. Thursday: Bernard Rapoport, the Waco insurance magnate and philanthropist, will attend the party.

Wow - mariachis and a taco truck! Does the campaign team think that’s going to make them hip to Hispanic voters or do they realize how patronizing and stereotypical it seems? Likely not. They’d do just as well to roast a pig in honor of her longtime home state of Arkansas.

wow. that’s the most transparent pandering i’ve seen in a long time. my hispanic friends would see right through this but maybe they’re the exception.

Hillary’s party is no more stereotypical than Obama having a party and serving Fried Chicken and Watermelon. This is Texas after all and we have a huge Hispanic presence, so what difference does it make what the entertainment and buffet has. I am white and I love tacos and mariachi bands. At least her campaign is making an effort here in Waco, as is Obama’s. Funny, I haven’t seen any McCain parties hyped!

Patronizing and stereotypical??? I wonder if Obama is going to have a rally and serve Fried Chicken and Watermelon as food and Snoop Dogg as entertainment…….that would be stereotypical. Having a mariachi band with tacos is just as much a Texas thing as it is a Mexican thing. Remember, what Texas was before it was Texas……MEXICO!!!
DEAL WITH IT!

HILLARY CLINTON COMES HERE on Friday for an Election Rally. Details: noon to 3 p.m. at the Waco Convention Center, with Clinton arriving about 2 p.m., but come well before then because you’ll have to go through security.

Jake misses the point.
1) Obama’s campaign isn’t offering chicken and watermelon, nor has it that I’ve seen. So don’t say “it’s no more stereotypical…” because it is. A more accurate comparison would be IF Obama were to come to town and advertise a country band and chicken fried steak. But he’s NOT because that would be patronizing and offensive.
2) this isn’t about being stereotypical of the candidate as you’ve been - rather, it’s about patronizing a segment of voters; I’ve been to numerous Texas themed events in Waco and NEVER have mariachis and taco trucks been used as the advertised symbology for Texas; if Clinton were known as a mariachi and taco fan (like Bill was notorious for his McDonald’s affinity), it would be a different matter. Does Mike Huckabee advertise Barbra Striesand and kosher food at New York events? Doubt it.
3) Before Texas was the state of Texas, it was also a republic, one of the confederate states, part of Spain, France and Mexico, not to mention native Indian territory. Don’t gloss over history by picking and choosing. Had Santa Ana finished his job, you’d have more room to pay homage to Mexico’s indomitability.
I have no problems with mariachis or tacos. But don’t tell me it’s not peculiar for a Senator to offer those items and not draw disgust.

The Campaign Office opening (and the music and food and campaign materials) was enjoyed by lots of people of all types. The Trib came over too so you can read all about it.
