It’s David Cook, by default
TRIB BALLOT
Last night’s performances left me disappointed. I was expecting an all-on-the-line, wow-em set of performances.
What we got were good, but not great, performances. They were musically solid, but lacked the star quality you’d hope for.
The best performances of the night for me were at the beginning: David Archuleta’s “And So It Goes” (which made my toddler say “Wow”) and David Cook’s “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” Both left me wanting to hear more. Unfortunately the rest of the night didn’t pan out.
Let me also point out that Syesha dressed to kill. She had three STUNNING outfits, and the playful flirting during “fever” was hot. Her performances weren’t in the same category as her stuff last week, but she looked good.
David Cook won the night, but only by default. It wasn’t so much that he did anything as unique or creative as he’s done in the past with “Hello” or “Always Be My Baby” as that he didn’t have a truly bad number, like David Archuleta did with “With You” (what was he thinking!) or Syesha did with “Hit Me Up” (what were the producers thinking!).
Actually, all the producer choices were bad. They should have let the contestants pick two songs each.
In past seasons, record mogul Clive Owen picked the third song, but that was getting pretty bad too. And in season 2 the contestants picked songs out of a fish bowl, which proved even more bizarre. So it’s a formula open to tweaking that needs to be tweaked again.
Based on performances, we should be headed to the battle of the Davids, but voting can be surprising at any level of “American Idol.”
