‘Idol’ telethon lacks breakout performances

This years’ “Idol Gives Back” failed to impress me, performance-wise, in its extended 2.5+ hours of live telecast.

I did like the “Shout to the Lord” performance by the final eight at the end and Carrie Underwood’s actual performance, long after Terri Hatcher butchered “Before He Cheats.”

Other than those two songs and a couple of the comedy bits (Robin Williams, especially), there really wasn’t anything that made me jump out of my chair.

The videos of poverty and illness were very touching, of course, but a telethon is usually star-studded with grerat performances. This one fell pretty flat.

So I’m not inspired to order anything from iTunes, even if all the proceeds will go to charity.

So tonight we’ll get back on track with an elimination. I’m still pulling for Carly to get the boot. How about you?

Yeah, Nathan, it was a yawner last night. And I can’t help but feel all those videos of people in dire circumstances are exploitive. I mean, I know you have to SHOW people misery to get them to pony up, but still…

As for the performances, the ones I caught (I didn’t watch the whole thing - even more boring than the Oscars) did not impress me.

Carly tonight? I can go along with that.

Okay, I guess we are all in agreement that it was a snoozefest. How many times do we need to see the idol contestants on the phones already? I must confess that I did enjoy the idol eights performance of the song from Rent. You know 525,600 minutes. Thought Kristy and David Archuletta nailed their snippets on that. Of course Sanjaya (or however you spell his name) could sing that song and I would enjoy it. That’s right, I enjoy some show tunes, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
