OK, the Atlanta auditions were an evenly mixed bag. It was almost like they alternated between good and bad, with Paula’s “Is it yes or is it no” montage thrown in for time kill.

And in the end we found out the reason for killing time in the last couple of shows: There’s one more audition show tonight that is a grab bag of leftovers from the other episodes. Oh fun!

Seriously, it’s time to move on to Hollywood. It’s time to let us vote on something. It’s time to get rid of the silly costumes.

I really admired Asia’h, the girl whose father had just died. To audition two days later took guts. To sing “How Do I Live” was astounding. And to sing it that well was downright jaw-dropping. She’s got serious potential written all over her. No wonder Paula cried.

I also found Amanda, the rock ‘n’ roll nurse, a bit intriguing. She’s definitely a rock, not a pop, star. But she does have a certain flair and a spark that might carry her farther than Gina got last year.

My question, though, after 7 episodes is this: Why must every female rocker audition with a Janis Joplin song and try to sound just like Janis? You can see that Simon is sick of that pattern. Come in and sing something by Heart, or Pat Benetar, or anyone else.

The girl who fell on her name tag made me smile. I admired how she could jump right back into the spot she was in her song. Yes, she looked like the proverbial chicken; yes she couldn’t carry a tune. But she did have spunk. And unlike Lou Grant, I like spunk.

Finally, Josiah singing with a British accent was bizarre. I think he startled the judges even. Was it an act, a gimmick to get him to Hollywood? Or is that what naturally happens when you live in your car for 10 months? According to this article out of Knoxville, Tenn., his style is “Brit Pop.” Hmmm….

So will tonight be the clunkers, or a mixture of good and bad. We’ll discuss it all tomorrow.
