Are the auditions rigged?
Here’s a question we hear a lot: Is the audition process rigged?
Well, obviously, there has to be something going on. I know from articles in the Trib last summer that there is a round of auditioning for producers before Randy, Paul and Simon ever make it to the audition city. So seriously, they are letting some of these people through to sing for Simon after hearing how really bad they are.
I produced the Trib’s “Waco’s Got Talent” series last year, and a few of our contestants had tried out for ‘Idol’ in Dallas. They were seriously better than some of the auditions we got to see on TV.
I’ve even been told by the officially rejected that there are several different tables of producers and that each table is looking for something different. They may tell you, “You have a nice voice, but that’s not what we’re looking for.” Some tables are supposed to pick the clunkers, so these disgruntled auditioners tell me.
Now comes this report that Joshua Boson, who tried out in South Carolina, sang two auditions, one they told him was a joke and one for real. You can guess which one got aired. He reports that producers specifically requested he sing the song from “Dreamgirls” for the joke audition.
This makes a lot of sense. I’ve often wondered how they could montage so many people singing the same song, usually really badly.
I’m inclined to believe his remarks.
