American Idol: Down but not out

Who is your favorite past Idol runner-up?

I’ve been scanning the web for the top stories on American Idol to relate to you. My favorite headline was “If an American Idol falls in the forest and no one is listening…”

So, many of the prognosticators believe the show is on its last legs. One even compared the seventh season to the awkward teenage years: Yes, the show is still the most popular in the class, but its entering those adolescent changes.

Despite these doubts, sponsors are still lining up. Ford, Coca Cola, and AT&T all return as major sponsors, giving FOX a jump on other networks in ad revenue as the writers’ strike wears on, according to this article. And if that strike does continue for several more weeks, TV watchers are going to be happy to see the old familiar in Idol. After all, if American Gladiators can garner 40 million viewers its first week, you can bet Idol will do well too.

I’d say at this point it’s too soon to tell how good or bad the season truly will be. After all, the whole punch of the show depends largely on the final pool of 12 which won’t be named for several weeks yet. If there are a few shining stars among them, then Idol’s numbers will be rising faster than Hillary’s.

Let’s not forget, the general consensus is that Kelly and Carrie are the two “big discoveries” of the Idol franchise. But between them came Reuben, whose album sales faltered, and Fantasia, who also failed to generate a great following. After Carrie have come two more “lesser” winners. So maybe we’re due for another big surprise.

Speaking of Carrie, Country Weekly is reporting that Carrie gained 20 pounds during her season on Idol. Her weight loss secrets are in the February issue of Shape magazine.

Enjoy tonight’s show. Tomorrow we’ll discuss the good, bad, and ugly of it all. Also, we’ll have our first dose of Simon Smack.
