Hope for the teen crowd
TRIB BALLOT
Simon Cowell has announced that the minimum age on “American Idol” will have to be lowered soon.
According to this report, Cowell believes the show will have to “go younger,” dropping the age from 16 to 14 soon.
While some 14-year-old girls can actually sing pretty well, most boys are still trying to get their “new lower voices” under control at that age. When what you’re singing suddenly drops an octave, you really lose your bearings for a while, in my experience.
Also, while David Archuleta does show maturity and depth at age 17, how many 14-year-olds are really capable of singing some of these “Idol”-selected genres with the appropriate emotional gravitas?
Instead of going younger, I wish “Idol” would realize there is some good undiscovered talent that is older. For instance, I’ve always been just above the cut-off age. I was a year too old in Season 1, and then was still a year too old when they raised the age in Season 4. Raise it to 35 or 40 and give some of us old guys a chance!
On another note, Simon encouraged girls to cry to get more votes. Really.

America gets it right
TRIB BALLOT
Based on recent performance, the right person went home last night. Well, they’re all going home this week, but you know what I mean — left the competition.
In a week where we’ve lost Tamayra Gray and Chris Daughtry in past seasons, we remain on a collision course to the battle of the Davids this season. But, it was stated that only 1 million votes (out of 51 million) separated first and third this week. Syesha does have a shot to be the spoiler in all this — make no mistake about it.
On a separate note, a couple of weeks ago I reported that David Cook’s 2006 album “Analog Heart” was available as a download on amazon.com. Well, American Idol execs worked their magic and it was quickly pulled down, before I was able to download it.
After searching intermittently, I have found this website where you can listen to the songs from the album. There is no download option and right-clicking won’t work either, but you can at least hear David’s first solo effort, as well as the next-to-last album by Axium, a group he fronted. Enjoy!
FYI: Brooke White’s album and Carly (Hennessey) Smithson’s two albums are still available on Amazon. Curious, huh?

Performances leave no doubt who should go home
TRIB BALLOT
Yesterday, an alert A&M alumna in the Trib office kept sending me emails she was getting from the ex-student association about voting for Jason. One key line of one of the emails said “Something special happens when the Aggie family unites in support of a fellow Ag—bonds are strengthened, memories are made, and the Aggie story gains another layer.”
If the performances last night are really the new layer Aggies want to achieve, then you all have just hit a NEW LOW.
The boy stunk on ice last night. And that’s being kind.
There is no doubt in my mind that he was the worst performer of the night. He’s been the worst for the last several weeks. And he said up front last night that he actually knew these songs, so he can’t blame the newness anymore. Simon’s comment of “It was utterly atrocious” was even kind. If he had sung that in his initial audition, he’d still be studying landscape architecture in College Station and none of us would ever have heard of him.
Well, actually, they might have shown it as one of the really bad auditions we were supposed to laugh at.
Aside from Jason, Syesha had another strong night, making a very good claim to be in the final three. She has finally hit her stride, and her second song was so emotional you couldn’t help but tear up, at least on the inside.
David Cook squandered the opportunity to be truly brilliant. Yes, he was solid and should be in the top 3. But this was truly his genre night to shine, and he merely glimmered.
The shining star of the night BY A COUNTRY MILE was David Archuleta, who just won back my vote. After coming to the conclusion the last few weeks that David Cook should win, I’m now leaning David A’s way again. He was BRILLIANT! I loved the almost percussion-only arrangement of “Stand By Me.” And the tender care he took with “Love Me Tender” made me wish I had a wife to snuggle with while he sang.
So, Aggie Nation, I admire the sentiment, but please, please be honest enough to realize Jason must GO HOME!

Pop-Tart your way to an “American Idol” concert
TRIB BALLOT
Are you eagerly anticipating the appearance of this year’s top 10 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas (August 25) or the Toyota Center in Houston (August 24)? Maybe you’d prefer the show in Oklahoma City (August 28) or Tulsa (September 13)? Or maybe the gambler in you would like to bet you’ll be at the show in Bossier City (August 26)?
Well, here is some news you can use: Go to poptarts.com on May 13 to get a password for advanced ticket sales on May 14. Pop-Tarts is offering the tickets this way before they go on sale to the general public. I’m not sure how this is exclusive and not available to the general public anyway, but this report does not mention you needing any proofs of purchase of codes from Pop-Tarts boxes in order to get the password.
But, if you’re eating the favorite toaster pastries anyway, you can save tokens from specially-marked packages for a limited-edition special American Idol speaker for your MP3 player. Think how much better David Cook will sound when you hear him through a speaker with a Pop-Tarts logo on the side.
Or, if you’re poor (like me and most people I know), buy the generic toaster pastries and watch the TV show for free. As Fred pointed out, it’s like the Bread and Circuses of the modern generation.

Looking toward the past with new release
TRIB BALLOT
As we wait eagerly for David Cook to rock the house tomorrow night on “Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame Week,” let’s turn our attention to an almost Idol of the past.
Clay Aiken finished second in season 2 in the closest balloting the show has yet seen. (We could be headed to the record-breaker this season, but who knows?) Since then he has released three albums, “Measure of a Man,” which was all original stuff; “A Thousand Different Ways,” which featured four new songs and eight covers; and a Christmas album that was mostly the standard carols.
Tomorrow comes Clay’s first all-original CD since his debut, “On My Way Here.” This CD marks the first time RCA records allowed Clay to truly pick everything himself. The result is supposed to be something less pop and more orchestral, with a little hint of R&B. It’s a kind of throwback album, without actually singing standards.
Clay, who described himself as a square peg and Barry Manilow II, says that if it fails to sell, he has no one to blame but himself.
I was always a Clay Aiken fan, so I intend to pick it up tomorrow. But, I’m pretty much a square peg myself.
To read more about the album, you can check out this article from Clay’s home town, Raleigh, N. Car.

The woman that made Simon blush
TRIB BALLOT
OK, so apparently it is for real. Simon’s first kiss, at age 9, was with Tara Miller, now Tara McDonald Smith.
And apparently, before all the “Idol” madness really got going several years ago, he listed her as his first love in an interview.
Smith, who now lives in Petaluma, Calif., has been swept up into the tabloid limelight since her call to Simon on Wednesday night’s episode, which apparently some girlfriends put her up to.
She’s hoping for a future meeting with Simon, and is ready for a second kiss.
Incidently, that first kiss was the result of a game of spin the bottle. She was 8 at the time.
You can get the rest of the scoop in this report from her local newspaper, The Press Democrat.

I’ll miss Brooke White
TRIB BALLOT
I’ll miss Brooke. I really will. I especially like her when she’s at the piano, and I think that should be the idea behind any album she records. But I also liked her personality and her constant smile.
And I really can’t understand why, other that the supposed “cuteness” factor, Jason Castro escaped the bottom two.
But the results are what they are, and I can’t change them. So looking ahead, we’re still on a path to the battle of the Davids, Syesha’s fantastic arrangement of “Thank the Lord for the Night Time” kept her deservedly alive, and next week will feature songs by artists in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. David Cook should definitely get a chance to shine.
Three things struck me as interesting as I watched last night’s results show. First was the absolutely lame attempt by Ryan to cover up Paula’s gaffe Tuesday night. Apparently, the “rumors” aren’t true, and the slip was all a result of the judges being poorly informed about the format Tuesday night. “We love Paula, and she’s here to stay,” was the gist of what Ryan had to say. So were these untrue rumors the ones about her being stoned on the show (which is what I heard), or were they about her getting kicked off the show (which better fits Ryan’s comment)? That’s a stumper.
Second was the bizarre phone call from Simon’s first crush. The whole thing was almost too funny to be true, as if it were staged. That’s another stumper.
And finally, there was Neil Diamond’s performance, which was better than I expected it to be. Let’s face it: His voice has not held up well over the years. But he has covered for it by limiting the range of that new song. What most interested me were the lyrics of the song. Diamond is, or at least was, Jewish. Yet, while not specifically mentioning Christ, the song used several words that most fit a Christian context: amazing grace, faith, forgive, save, and several others. I kept thinking throughout that I could sing this in my church. Has Diamond converted? Does anyone out there know?
I realize that the presence of those words does not prove a conversion. But I thought the complete prominence of them and the large group of them throughout the song was interesting.

Please, let it be Jason
TRIB BALLOT
After singing a “mini-concert” of Neil Diamond tunes last night, the contestants gave us a clear picture of who needs to go and who needs to stay.
Simon is probably right that Syesha is in trouble, because her fan base has traditionally been smaller, but the one who needs to go is Jason Castro.
I realize he is our home-state boy and is an Aggie student, but it’s time to let him get back to class.
His two songs last night were forgettable, and that’s being kind. “Forever in Blue Jeans” suffered from bizarre octave changes. Either he didn’t think he had the range to do the whole thing in one octave, or he thought he’d show off his lower notes, but whatever the reason, it was VERY weird. “September Morn” was extremely pitchy, and I’m not sure he ever got into the right key until the key change for the final chorus. It was flat, both musically and performance-wise, and deserving of dismissal.
For the others, Brooke did quite well on “I Am…I Said,” after singing a song that really wasn’t a Brooke song for her first number, “I’m a Believer.” It was in tune and she obviously had fun, but it’s not a song that suits her. She’s lucky she got a second chance.
Syesha deserves another week if for no other reason than she turned “Thank the Lord for the Night Time” into a bona fide dance number, with R&B inflection and a hint of Cuban tones. In a season where some of the guys have successfully rearranged songs to show their chops, Syesha became the first girl to do it, and she did it with flair. Once she’s finally let her personality show and quit trying to sing things the way Whitney Houston would sing them, she’s revealed her inner star.
And the Davids kept on their path to the finals, both using their skills for arranging. I thought Little David missed his mark a little in that he didn’t choose one slow song to exercise his runs on, but his total rearrangement of “Sweet Caroline” was indeed hot and “America” was fun.
Big David made “I’m Alive,” one of Diamond’s more recent and techno-inspired songs, into an even faster rock anthem. I was unfamiliar with “All I Really Need Is You,” but David made me want to get familiar with it.
So all in all a pretty good night. The Davids kept their place at the top, and Jason showed why it’s time for him to go.

Thank the Lord for the night time
TRIB BALLOT
It’s Neil Diamond night, and I for one can hardly wait. Neil is one of the greatest and most prolific songwriters of the last 50 years. He has songs that are very much pop, a few that border on rock, a couple with a country lean, and even some more recent techno sounds. In short, there is something for everyone.
I am assuming that since we are down to five contestants, they’ll each sing two songs, as in previous seasons. If that pans out, here is what I’d like to hear from each contestant (in alphabetical order) tonight:
David Archuleta — “The Story of My Life” and “He Ain’t Heavy…He’s My Brother” Jason Castro — “Crunchy Granola Suite” and “Done Too Soon” David Cook — “America” and “Red, Red Wine” Syesha Mercado — “Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show” and “September Morn” Brooke White — “I Am…I Said” and “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers”
How about you? Any thoughts on what each contestant should sing?

Carly Smithson and the huge tattoo
TRIB BALLOT
We’ve commented around the Trib for weeks that the huge tattoo on Carly’s arm was costing her support and that she’d be better off wearing sleeves every week.
But how many people have wondered if the girl’s face on her arm was somebody in particular? I know I have.
Rumors included that the tat was actually a rendering of British rock star Amy Winehouse, but according to this interview with Smithson, that’s not true.
Smithson claims that because the tattoo is currently only black and white, it might look like Winehouse, but it is actually a rendering of a photo she has of a geisha. She claims she had it done two years before Winehouse became a hit.
Then she goes on to say that once it’s colored in, with the all white face and red lips, it will be clear it’s a geisha. She just hasn’t had time to get it fixed during the “Idol” madness.
My question: If it’s more than two years old, what happened to all that time for coloring it in? Even Andrew Lloyd Webber thought it was Winehouse. Are we being sold a bill of tattoo goods?

David Cook ready to release album? You bet!
TRIB BALLOT
OK, we’ve been saying around the Trib office for weeks now that Big David could release an album today. Randy Jackson even agreed with us last week.
So David’s gone ahead and done it.
According to this report, David’s 2006 album, “Analog Heart” is the No. 1 downloaded album on iTunes this week, beating out Mariah Carey’s “E=MC2.”
Th album apparently didn’t generate much buzz back in the day, but David has re-released it digitally, and thereby bypassed BMG’s first right of refusal on all “Idol” work.
All that vocal talent and brains too? What a deal!
I might just have to go download it myself.

End result: Still on target for finals
TRIB BALLOT
Let me begin by saying I shall not shed a tear to see Carly gone. In fact I’m thrilled that the music of Neil Diamond will be spared her interpretation. He is, after all, one of my favorite singer-songwriters of all time, and she is, well, not.
But I think we all know that Brooke got lucky to survive the week. Not only did she survive, but she escaped the stools all together, which was a bigger shock. Votefortheworst.com must have really come through on that one.
And I’m betting she knows most of Neil’s songbook already, and she won’t have a lyric meltdown next week.
Another shock was that Syesha was stooled. There is ABSOLUTELY NO reason she should have been sent there this week. Her performance could not have been better, and it was just wrong to send her there this week.
Jason should have been there — and he knew it too. He was already campaigning not to have to sing “Memory” again. This was after he yawned on camera backstage while waiting for the results. His appeal is wearing thin on me.
But with all that said, we’re still on track for the showdown of the David in four weeks. And I think David Cook is looking forward to it. You can see it in the way he’s gently “big-brothering” David Archuleta.
And I for one can hardly wait to see it pan out!

Broadway offers hope for ‘Idol’ wannabes
TRIB BALLOT
At last we’ve found a niche for some of the remaining contestants who aren’t going to win and don’t have the style to maintain a pop career, despite their strong voices.
Syesha Mercado is destined for the bright lights. Her performance was stellar, miles better than anything she had done previously. The personality she injected into “One Rock ‘n’ Roll Too Many” was infectious. She was in a word brilliant.
Carly, who as you know is not my favorite, actually showed some chops in “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I cringed in her video when she was singing “All I Ask of You,” which has to be my favorite romantic duet of all time (and she was butchering it). Then she came out and nailed “Superstar,” again with personality we hadn’t seen in previous performances. Now, I’d like to see her as Rizzo in “Grease.”
But the winner of the night for me was David Archuleta, who we knew would soar in this format. Little David proved he can do what Big David has done so well: rearrange a song we know into a winner of a pop single. He did exactly what Simon said he wanted: Make the song contemporary. And then Simon didn’t approve. Blah on you, Simon!
My top 3 for the night were Little David, Syesha, and Big David, who showed he has a good voice even outside a rock setting. That wasn’t my favorite performance for him. I wish he would have rocked the arrangement a little, but he was still great.
Unfortunately there must be a bottom three, and I’d still put Carly in it, even though it was her best showing by miles. Brooke’s faltering at the beginning will likely cost her, but in reality, the nervousness that followed added the perfect vulnerability to the song. It would have been a flop on any other number, but it worked well for “You Must Love Me.”
The clunker of the night was Jason, who not only did not know the song was sung by a cat in the show (It’s called “Cats” for a reason, Dude. DUH!), but also butchered the melody, was pitchy all over the place, and flat out stunk. He should go home tonight based on that performance, but since he’s getting the teen girl vote and the stoner vote, he will probably be safe.
Although I’m really pulling for her to be around when Neil Diamond is the mentor because his songs were made for her, I’m predicting Brooke will get the boot.
We’ll see tonight.

Webber wonderings
TRIB BALLOT
What will Andrew Lloyd Webber night hold?
My main question is whether David Cook will take the easy road and sing a song from “Jesus Christ Superstar” or will take a song we wouldn’t expect and then rock it up. I’m hoping for the latter.
I’m pretty sure Carly will take something from “Superstar.”
Somebody is going to sing “Memory” from “Cats.” Hopefully, it won’t turn into the talent show from the movie “Jersey Girl” where everyone sang “Cats.”
I’m hoping David Archuleta takes something from “Les Miserables.” I think he could really shine on “Bring Him Home.”
But we’ll find out tonight at 7. Be sure to tell us what you think tomorrow.

Girls pale in comparison to previous years
TRIB BALLOT
Much has been said this season about the talent being better than any previous season on “American Idol.”
That may well be true in general. The guys have been pretty impressive, and there were no really awful clunkers you felt had to go soon. Sure, some of the already dismissed were dull, but they were at least in the right key and didn’t stoop to Hair Wars to make you vote for them.
But the girls have failed to impress me in recent weeks. By impress, I mean make me want to jump out of my seat and vote for one. They are in tune. They are doing a fine job. But I’m not going to search amazon.com for their CDs.
Saturday, I caught an episode of “American Idol Rewind,” from season 2. You’ll recall that that season also had two powerful male contestants that everyone assumed would face off in the final — Clay and Reuben.
The episode I saw was the final three, which featured Kimberly Locke as the third contestant.
Now, K-Lo has had a decent career. She’s released two albums. I have both of them and enjoy them. She had a top 20 single with “Eighth World Wonder” off of her first album. And she has been a spokeswoman for Lane Bryant fashions.
But I’ll bet you that very few of you even remember her, much less bought her CD.
She sang three songs on the episode: “Band of Gold,” “Inseparable,” and some Burt Bakarack song I’d never heard before, other than that one week six years ago.
And she nailed every single one of them. With power, with style, with the right areas of control. They were three stellar performances, the likes of which we have yet to see a girl this season consistently deliver.
All of which tells me, despite the overall increase in talent, the Davids are the only ones likely to have breakout careers. The rest better get hosting gigs on the TV Guide Channel.

Kristy Lee Cook is engaged
TRIB BALLOT
Now that her run on “American Idol” is over, Kristy has announced that her boyfriend “Andy” proposed to her on March 15 in the sauna of her “Idol” apartment.
Kristy said she was keeping it on the “down low” for the last month because of all the “Idol madness.”
Andy apparently reproposed on the set after her elimination was announced.
Kristy is shooting for a June 2009 wedding and said she would invite the “Idol” judges.
Here is the link to E! Online’s report, as well as some interesting final thoughts from Kristy on her performances, her career, and, of course, Simon Cowell.

Not my choice, but not a crime of voting
TRIB BALLOT
I don’t think this was Kristy Lee Cook’s week to go home. And I don’t believe Carly should have been safe.
But that said, I also don’t believe that Kristy was the next American Idol. As long as the two Davids are still standing in the final week, it really doesn’t matter to me in what order the rest fall. I’d like Brooke to be the last girl standing, but I won’t be furious if she’s not.
I also have to admit that they had me puzzled when David Cook and Jason were in opposite groups.
But of far more interest to me last night were the questions from viewers and the responses given.
I don’t think Simon got the point that we want to know the shading that indicates something is a cruise ship performance rather than a cabaret performance. His response seemed to indicate his critiques rely on the “Thesaurus of Criticism” just so he isn’t saying the exact same words every time.
I really liked the question about which of Paula’s songs most describes her relationship with Simon. That was pretty original.
And David Cook’s manner of answering that he is indeed single was brilliant.
I’m glad Mariah week is behind us. Andrew Lloyd Webber is a much more intriguing mentor in my book, and with the breadth of style in his songbook, there ought to be some great performances next week.

Who thought this was a good idea?
TRIB BALLOT
I liked how Ryan prefaced the show by reminding us that the judges never want contestants to sing songs by Whitney, Celine or Mariah. It was like the little “American Idol” disclaimer before the tragedy.
To me, this was the equivalent of last season’s Latin theme with JLo. Lukewarm with a bitter aftertaste.
That said, the night definitely belonged to the guys. There should be three girls in the bottom three. The biggest question is which female performance was just good enough to be fourth and safe.
Let’s start with the guys: David Archuleta did a good job with a message song, as expected. I didn’t think it was his breakout performance, by any stretch of the imagination, but it was good and credible.
Jason’s “luau” performance was pleasant. I actually would describe it similarly to how Simon described Brooke last week. It was like a pleasant walk in the park. Again, I wasn’t jumping out of my chair, but it far exceeded the ladies.
But let’s be real. The real winner of the night was David Cook. On my notepad after his performance I simply wrote “Thank you, David Cook!” Yes, David, you saved the night with a brilliant arrangement that I assume must be your own, since Mariah wrote the song and commented on your originality. Surely as the copyright holder, she would at least have been informed if someone else had recorded a similar cover, right? And like Mariah said, I was left wanting to hear more.
For the ladies, the best of the night to me was a tossup between Kristy and Brooke. Kristy seems to have really come into her own. She’s choosing better songs, getting better country arrangements and singing with more confidence.
Brooke, I thought, was strong at the beginning, but then she definitely rushed it from the bridge on. It marred an otherwise credible performance. And even had she nailed it, it wouldn’t have been as good as any of the guys.
One of them will join Seyesha and Carly in the bottom three. Carly needs to go home. In the recaps of the performances, I thought it was clear hers was the worst. But she did do her best to stay in the running by wearing long sleeves and screaming — er I mean singing — a ballad. Seyesha started well, but repeating “vanishing” over and over didn’t thrill me.
Prognosticators are predicting Brooke, Carly and Seyesha, with Seyesha going home. I pulling for Carly to get a much-needed vacation. What do you think?

Simon searches for the beef
TRIB BALLOT
Simon returned to form by panning the girls last night on Mariah Carey night. Well, throw me a party and call me surprised!
His top three:
No. 3 For Kristy: “It was a little bit whiny.”
No. 2 For Carly: “I wanted you to sing this song weeks ago, but on Mariah night, can you hold up in direct comparison? And the answer is you didn’t.”
And No. 1 For Brooke: “It was a bit like ordering a hamburger and only getting the bun. The key ingredient was missing.”
How I wish I had gone to Wendy’s and skipped the whole show!

Maraih Carey night tonight
TRIB BALLOT
Following up her performance on Idol gives Back, Mariah Carey was the mentor for this week of “American Idol” and will be the songbook artist for the week.
For which contestant is this exactly a boon? Not David Cook, not Kristy Lee Cook, not Jason Castro. Their styles are all very anti-Mariah. Granted, David could totally rearrange a song, which I definitely hope he does. Rumors are his brother battling cancer will be in the audience tonight, so I hope he brings the house down.
Seyesha is apt to think this is a good style for her, but she’ll just prove herself a pale wannabe in comparison to Mariah’s vocal range.
Brooke has the temperament for some of the songs, but not the range to sing them.
Carly lacks the tenderness to sing a Mariah song. Rumors are she’ll sing “Without You,” no doubt with an angry, bitter, hard rock tone.
That leaves David Archuleta as the best chance to shine on a Mariah song, and only if he picks one like “Hero” that has a major “heart strings factor.”
Again, who thought this was a good idea?
Maybe we’ll be surprised. But don’t bet the family farm in Vegas.

More on song choice
TRIB BALLOT
Song choice keeps rearing its head in the wake of Michael’s dismissal on Thursday night.
First, here is an excerpt from an interview with Michael on his dismissal. He claims he was shocked because he hadn’t been in the bottom three previously and had had some of his strongest efforts in recent weeks. He also has no regrets for singing “Dream On” and refused to pan to the judge’s opinion that he should stick with soul songs.
And second, here is a report out of Ireland on the comments from the original producer to Carly’s now famous 378-copy-selling first album flop. Steve Dorff claims Carly had an amazing voice as a 15-year-old kid, but was adamant about singing rock songs and refused his advice to stick with a pop sound. He eventually had to quit working on the project due to creative differences, and the result was her own creative direction in the rock album that no one bought, despite a multi-million dollar PR attempt. Does this sound familiar? Seems her song choice is following this same path toward her demise.
We’ll see what she chooses tomorrow.
