The Iditarod
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is a fierce trek across more than 1,000 miles of Alaskan Wilderness. In 2008 a record number of 110 teams entered the race. It began on March 1 in Anchorage and ended 10-17 days later in Nome, Alaska. The race first began in 1973, with the official length in miles being 1,049. There are two trails, a northern and southern route which are used alternately. The entry fee is 3,000 dollars but the prize money totals 874,800 that is divided between all the finishing teams. A sled dog team is made up of a maximum of 16 dogs and minimum of 12. To finish the race a team must have at least six dogs still running.
