Griffin the right choice
By John Werner

It wasn’t an easy choice for Art Briles, but it’s the right one.
He’s going with freshman Robert Griffin Saturday against Northwestern State. Despite his inexperience, Griffin’s talent and potential can’t be denied. There’s no use wasting it on the bench.
I wrote in Monday’s column that Griffin is arguably the most gifted athlete Baylor has ever had at quarterback. He’s got the kind of explosiveness and arm to star at the college level. Plus, he’s a quick study who has grasped Briles’ complicated offensive scheme.
I still think fifth-year senior Kirby Freeman and junior Blake Szymanski will see some time at some point this season. As a true freshman, Griffin is going to take his share of lumps and make some mistakes. But he’s going to pull off some dazzling plays and give Baylor fans hope for the future.

I didn’t go to the game, but I did catch some of it on tv. Griffin is the best hope at qb, but he has to settle down and not let adrenaline get the upper hand. His passes were overblown and overthrown, but it seemed more like freshman jitters than anything else.
Maybe they can dose him with a little of whatever they give the BU bear mascot before the game.
The defense looked a little loose, but swarmed to the ball and delivered some solid hits. But then again, I just watched bits and pieces of the first half.
They should take away a win this week, but my Aggies should have done that last week, too. I hope Baylor football climbs back out of the pit and into credibility again. It’s no fun beating a team that’s on everybody’s homecoming list.

I can’t see us handing the Heisman to Griffin just yet. I saw some real talent there, but BU has had some very good QB’s in the past (distant). Let’s not forget Isbell, Trull, Carlson, or Joe.

It was just as expected, more of the same. It strikes me as strange that BU has two of the fastest kids in America on their team and can’t manage to score points! I agree Griffin is by far more talented that the other 2 so called QB’s. However, he has to take control of the game. Hopefully, this will happen in the next two games because I don’t believe he can do it once Big 12 games start. And for those of you who think he is the second coming of V Young, there is no comparing BU’s line to Texas. Keep hope alive the season is early!

Baylor just needs twenty-one other Griffins to win a game.

I was hoping our new coach would run a few of the trick plays they practiced. Maybe hand off the kick returns 10 or 15 times. Except the special teams would have to catch the ball first.
I think Coach Briles is a winner. Anyway you cut it, at 1.8 million he has to be putting some money in the bank.

For a non-red shirt freshman, I thought Griffin did well. He did overthrow a few passes, but he had a few dropped too, including a touchdown pass. He was 11 out of 19.
To me, he looked confident. My biggest issue with him in the game were the two funbles on the option handoff to the running back. Those were drive-killers.
