Overnight fire leaves Riesel firefighter, family homeless

Riesel volunteer firefighters were taken by surprise when they arrived on the scene of a fire just outside town Wednesday night.

The home, located on J and B Springs Road near the Falls-McLennan county Line, was completely engulfed in flames. It also belonged to one of the department’s firefighters.

“The most ironic thing was that it belonged to one of our own firefighters,” said Riesel Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Walter Kuehl. James Nunn has volunteered for the department for four years, he said.

Firefighters from Mart and Marlin volunteer fire departments helped control the flames, which took two and a half hours and two trips to retrieve extra water to extinguish completely, Kuehl said.

The home was completely destroyed. Nunn, his wife Vicky, and their three sons are now homeless and staying with relatives in Riesel.

“They basically got out of there with the clothes on their back,” Kuehl said.

Texas First State Bank in Riesel has set up the James and Vicky Nunn Fund to collect donations for the family. Already, the community has begun collecting clothing and shoes for the family, and a benefit barbecue is being planned by the local Lions Club to aid the family, Kuehl said.

“That’s the good thing about a small community,” Kuehl said. “We come together quickly when something like this happens so that they will not lack for anything.”
