Update: 5-year-old killed in Limestone County home shooting

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a 5-year-old boy was killed by an 8-year-old boy in an accidental shooting early Thursday morning.

The shooting happened at a home on Farm-to-Market 937 near the Box Church community. While the sheriff’s office is still investigating the shooting, it appears that the two children were playing with a gun that was in the home, said Sheriff Dennis Wilson.

Wilson identified the victim as James Ryan Bates.

“This is just one of those tragic, tragic deals where it looks like two little boys were playing with a firearm that they shouldn’t have been playing with, and playing turned into tragedy,” Wilson said.

The 5-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene with a single gunshot wound to the chest, Wilson said. Justice of the Peace Marcus Ray Hanna ordered the boy’s body to be sent to the Southwestern Institute for Forensic Services in Dallas for an autopsy.

Wilson said the two children were not related. Two adults who are not blood-related to either of the children were present at the home at the time of the shooting, he said. The mother of the 5-year-old had left the home Thursday morning with a male friend and traveled to Groesbeck and was not in the home during the shooting, Wilson said.
