Hill County sheriff: Victim out of hospital to attend sister’s funeral

Thirteen-year-old Kiersten Jeter was released from the hospital in time to attend her younger sister’s funeral Saturday, said Hill County Sheriff Jeffrey T. Lyon.

Both girls were found bloodied, with their throats slit, inside the bathroom of an abandoned ranch house June 4 at 215 U.S. Highway 77 in rural Hill County. The sheriff’s office had received a 9-1-1 call from their mother, 32-year-old nursing student Debra Janelle Jeter, who told a dispatcher she had just killed her daughters.

Kiersten Jeter was rushed to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Her sister, 12-year-old Kelsey, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Debra Janelle Jeter is charged with murder and attempted capital murder, and is being held in the Hill County Jail on $1.5 million bail. Whitney-based Phil Weaver is her court-appointed attorney. Weaver has declined comment.

Jeter has declined to speak with investigators, Lyon said.

“We’re still asking that question, ‘Why?’” he said.

The sheriff said more than 400 people attended Kelsey Jeter’s funeral.

She needs to be served with a death sentence. How many people are going to take their anger and frustrations out on the kids. Regardless of how bad you hate someone or want to cause them grief, just walk away and don’t involve the kids. The poor daugther that survived will have to live with the loss of her younger sister, her mother on death row and the very thought that her own mother tried to kill her as well. What an absolute shame. Why couldn’t she have just left and left the children alone. If you have mental problems and know or anger issues, then in a sane moment tell anyone that you are a danger to your family and get help. It costs nothing. Out of everyone, I prey for the surviving daughter. What a life she has in front of her.

Before you comment, please take a few moments to make sure that what you're saying is civil and respectful. We don't tolerate personal attacks, insults, name-calling, impersonations or generally hateful comments — they don't make for a pleasant (or productive) conversation. We want to raise the level of debate and encourage a wide diversity of viewpoints — and that means disagreeing without being disagreeable. If you wouldn't say it to your grandmother, you probably shouldn't say it here.
