Fire leaves Coryell County woman homeless
A Coryell County woman is homeless after her house and all of her possessions burned to the ground late Monday in the community of Purmela.
Just before 7:30 p.m., Gatesville Fire Chief Billy Vaden said Joyce Shenelvecker called emergency crews and told them her house in the 1000 block of County Road 101 was fully engulfed in flames.
She told fire officials that her microwave had shorted, and she went to her brother’s house down the road. When she returned, she saw her house quickly being destroyed by flames.
When crews from Gatesville, Evant, Jonesboro and Levita arrived, Vaden said the wooden house had already been burned to the ground.
Because of the rural area, the main challenge in fighting the flames, Vaden said, was the lack of water. Water tankers were brought in to assist.
Fire crews left the scene just before 10 p.m., he said.
Shenelvecker stayed with her brother, Vaden said, and the American Red Cross was called in to help her.
