Longhorn player kicked off for Facebook comments

The Baylor Bears football team won’t have to contend with the Longhorns backup center on Saturday. He was kicked off the team because of comments he made on Facebook, a person close to the team has confirmed to Austin American-Statesman reporter Suzanne Halliburton, who blogs on the Bevo Beat.

According to the blog entry, Buck Burnette made an ill-advised post on his Facebook page after it was announced that Barack Obama won the election.

Halliburton blogs:

According to those who saw the Facebook page, Burnette updated his status shortly after Barack Obama was elected president Tuesday night and wrote that hunters should get their guns. One of the people who claimed to have seen Burnette’s original post said it also included a racial slur. Others saw what Burnette wrote and posted comments on other sites, encouraging their friends to shut down his page.

Burnette’s page has since been deleted from Facebook.

However, screen grabs show that he had updated his status to an apology. Burnette wrote: “Clearly I was in the wrong for what I did and I apologize for being a sore loser.”

Hmmm…I guess all those people talking smack about Baylor and saying how UT is better are eating their words right now. I guess that means UT is a hate-filled racist school also.

Let’s all grab our torches and pitch forks in protest!!!!

So the visceral attacks by the Obamunistas against those who dare to criticize the Anointed One start. Where’s the Waco Trib’s defense of the first amendment rights to one’s freedom of speech? Despite the player’s inflamitory remarks, when we deem political speech that we disagree with as unacceptable and censurable, we destroy the 1st amendment. Where’s the Waco Trib’s defense of this man’s right to expression and political speech? Oh, Carlos “La Raza” Sanchez and John “Pravda” Young only really care about their own rights - as far as they’re concerned the rest of us can go to blazes. Hypocrites.

John, I am so glad you realize that yes Barack is Anointed and filled with what God has for him. Also know that God is still in control with ALL AUTHORITY and Power. Be very careful when you mess with His own. He doesn’t take kindly to that. Also know that NOTHING will happen without God’s permission. Check the book of Job. Satan had to get permission. I said all of that to remind you Barack is fulfilling his destiny. God will never take anyone where His grace won’t keep them. Barack is not worried about you or the comments like those of that young man. I pray you see beyond his skin and see God’s Majesty unfold. Be Blessed my Brother!

I listen to these conservative talk show commentators and they always dismiss that racism is all but dead in the U.S. All it takes is a minority to appear to be advancing and the sheets come out of the cleaners. For some reason or another whites have the hardest time with other races taking a step forward. If it appear that a person is about to move forward, racist venom start to flow. There is only one God and I don't think he is black, white, brown or any other color. One race is not going to rule this world. Robert Kennedy said some 40 years ago in 1968, that we would be electing a , "Negro for President." If you remember God, allowed the children of Israel to wonder in the desert for 40 years to allow for those who were not of God to die out. This appear to be where we are now. The next 40 years all of Jim Crows' decendants should be clensed out. This country can then start anew.

Surely it’s possible to disagree with someone without threatening to “get our guns.” Listening to you subhuman mutants rant because you don’t get your way gets awful tiresome. YOU should be the ones to “man up” and grow up. You live in a democracy, remember? Or do you know what that even means?

John, you need to realize that the First Amendment protects citizens from being censored by the government. The First Amendment is not a free pass that gives everyone the right to say anything he or she wishes without any repercussions, including being thrown off a football team.

You know all this crapp is really starting to get on my nerves. So is there a law that says we have to love black people, or cant say a joke about something in the news. I swear people are always going to stick to there own race when it really comes down to it, I think its rediculouse for this man to be kicked off the team, were is his freedom of speech. God help all of you for all the petty bull crapp you let people get away with. Who cares if he’s not a black lover or upset that Obamma won everyone is intitled to there own opinion. Hell im not racist, but that doesn’t mean I have to choose them over my own race. Look at the prison system do you think the blacks whites and mexicans all hunker down together? Nope, and thats the way it is out here in the real world as well.

Bull-I hope you got a free t-shirt with your education. If you didn’t, you wasted your time and tax payer money. Hint Read your correspondences out loud and use spell check before you post them.

The statements made by the UT player were defamatory and hateful. I guess he’ll actually have to get educated and find a real job now. I bet his parents are very proud.

To: YJhiA-Don’t forget that the bible is a book of stories and not a historical book of facts. It was written in a time when occurrences of all kinds couldn’t be explained in any other way than to claim that they were the command of an almighty being. After 2000 years of language translations and rewritings, don’t you think the version you cling to now is just a bit different than the original scribblings? If you believe otherwise, you too have wasted your time and tax payer money.

In our society today, the actions of the UT player were hateful and wrong. Good to see that the coaching staff agrees.

“Burnette updated his status shortly after Barack Obama was elected president Tuesday night and wrote that hunters should get their guns.”

I believe the gun comment is alluding to the rumour of Obama wanting to take away our right to have guns. I have heard many people say that he is going to do that, but I am not sure if it is true or not. I did not read the full blog Burnette posted, but I dont think he was saying he wanted to kill anyone, just that the hunters need to be ready to defend their right to have guns.

But that is just what I took from the excerpt.

I am so sick of the insistance that everytime someone looks sideways at Barack Obama we have to apologize. He’s no more annointed than he is black. His mother was white, or is that forgotten. He has run as a black candidate under falsehoods just like he has done everything else. Lies, cover-ups and excuses. There are many wonderful people in this nation, of all races, who most of us would be proud to call President. It’s a shame one of them didn’t get elected. As for the UT football player, I wonder if the same sort of comment had been made about a person not of color, would he have been dealt the same punishment…I doubt it.

Okay what is worse? Derogatory remarks by a UT football player on his facebook or hanging a neuce from a tree?? Yeah- it was Baylor that did that…. so get over yourself. Baylor needs to stop crying and face the fact that they suck. The UT guy shouldn’t make remarks but we are not in a position to take away his right to freedom of speech. I’m sick of this crap about racism. Maybe I dont like Obama b/c he is a DEMOCRAT. Did you know that 98% of the African-American population voted for Barack???? While the caucasian voters were split 59% McCain, 41% Obama????? C’mon. It’s simple math……but yet, we’re the racist ones. This girl voting next to me last week asked me “Which guy is the black guy, I want to vote for him?” After I looked at her like she was f’ing retarded, she voted for McCain. SEE…. Seriously! People like that shouldn’t be allowed to vote in the Country. It makes me sick…..

Patriot - Your a fool. As a benefactor of white priviledge, it is clear you will never understand why player got dealt with in this way.

With white privilege you get the benefit of the doubt, but when you are black you have to prove your worth again and again. You do not see blacks as individuals you see them as one and when one messes up, every black person carries the blame and has to work even harder. But you will never know because with White Privilege you get the chance to redeem yourself over and over and over…

That is why so many anglos are afraid of Obama they are afraid they may get a dose of the pain and anguish that they have subjected minorities to for centuries. The era of white priviledge may end and that scares you…

The good thing about black folk, they just aren’t that evil so you don’t have anything to worry about.

Again, people need to realize that freedom of speech in this country protects us from censure by the government. This football player’s freedom of speech was not taken away—he can continue blogging and posting about guns all he wants, just not as part of the UT football team because they have standards for behavior. This is about on par with saying you should be able to tell your boss to go to hell and then cry about freedom of speech when you’re fired.

To Tired of Faux Patriots… I don’t believe that anywhere in the post was any indication that black people are “evil”. I do not group people on the basis of their skin color. Usually the grouping results from their mental ability. The truth about Barack Hussien Obama has nothing to do with the color of his skin. His associations, and radical views would be disgusting for a person of any race to have. I’m not afraid of Obama. I’m afraid of ignorance, with which he is ravaged on most of the issues facing our country. Anyone who thinks we can sit down with terrorists and “talk” things out is totally uneducated in international relations. My concern is not that we have a black president…I don’t care if he’s green. My concern is that way too many people were so anxious to have a black man in office that they overlooked his lack of qualifications and patriotism or for that matter his lack of a truly black pedigree. If you’re tired of “faux patriots”, how do you feel about “faux blacks”? He is half white, you know.

To Bull So you want to model outside life after prison life? I think most of us are better then that.

Come on people, it’s the actions of one person we’re talking about here. Those actions broke the behavior rules for the organization he was involved in and he was punished according to those rules.

Regardless of what you might think of Obama, he is the lawful President-elect set to take office when the term ends for the current lawfully elected President. As with anyone holding the highest office of our country, they both deserve our respect and our support regardless of what you might think of them or who you voted for. Now let’s leave the racism at the door and help our newly elected President do the job we, the people of the United States of America, elected him to do.

I’m an outsider not living in Texas, who couldn’t care less about either football team. I stumbled upon this discussion and this is my two cents:

  • Yes, the bible is all stories. It is not a historic document, is filled with contradictions and gross inconsistencies, encourages racism, sexism, murder and other despicable practices, and was “compiled” over 300 years after “Christ” supposedly died. Look it up - “Council of Nicea”. It was compiled by a roomful of religious men assembled by emperor Constantine (converted shortly after waging a very bloody war).

  • Freedom of speech and expression do not protect one from partaking in a sport or holding a job. Try threatening your boss with curses and obscenities. The football team has the right to choose who plays and why.

  • Racism is about as ridiculous and antiquated as the bible. A black man now holds the most powerful position in the world. If you don’t think that proves skin color is irrelevant I recommend you drink the proverbial kool-aid and stop wasting our oxygen.

  • Hey “Just Watch” - don’t be surprised if the Secret Service shows up at your front door. Freedom of Speech does not cover threatening the President or even predicting something bad will happen. Go too far and you and Bull might get a chance to question the minorities in prison first hand (after the salad party).

  • Obama did not hide anything about his past. Most of it is thoroughly laid out in his books and others written about him. Why do you think McWar had to make up so much crap? Cause the guy is clean. He’s incredibly intelligent, has studied the law, chose to work serving his community instead of taking a much higher-paying job with a law firm, his wife’s story is similar, he only owns one house (vs. the 13 McCain owns), he’s reasonable but firm, made a very sound choice for VP (unlike McCain and the beauty pageant runner-up), and all along Obama has not only behaved like a leader, but has been treated like such by colleagues and heads of state. Now if those aren’t qualities you want in a leader, if you would prefer someone like C+ Bush, then on January 20th you will officially be living in the wrong country.

  • Patriotism is as dangerous as terrorism if it is completely blind. Most ‘isms’ should be approached cautiosly and used in moderation.

  • George Bush had no real experience either other than failing at almost everything he attempted. Cheyney, Rove and Rumsfeld had tons of experience and look how bad they screwed things up. Experience can go either way. That’s why this time we chose to go with someone who is level-headed, educated, intelligent, young and energetic. If we’ve learned nothing from the last 8 years it’s that, like Ron White said, “You can’t fix stupid”.

  • Respect is earned. Even then it doesn’t mean anything unless it’s based on competent, intelligent, critical thinking and rigid moral standards.

I am willing to give him a chance as many other people should. I think people should stop saying horrible things about him and what our nation might become.
