Category Four Hurricane Ike headed for Cuba — Texas next?
Hurricane Ike, now a Category Four storm with 135 mph winds, is hitting the southeastern Bahamas now and expected to hit Cuba tonight. It’s already done substantial damage to the Turks and Caicos Islands and to Haiti.
So what happens after Ike is done with Cuba? We don’t really know yet. The big question is when, if ever, Ike will find a weak spot in the high-pressure ridge to the north that has kept Ike on its westward course. It was expected to have done so already — the Florida Keys are being evacuated on the possibility that it still might — but the computer models are sending the storm farther and farther west. At this point — and remember, a Gulf Coast landfall is still about a week away, an eternity in terms of forecasting — almost anywhere on the coast is a possible target.
As for intensity, a lot depends on how much interaction Ike has with Cuba. If, as expected, the storm spends a lot of time over the island, Ike will be weakened considerably. Whether Ike would restrengthen once in the open Gulf, or be kept off balance by wind shear as Gustav was, is something we just can’t say yet. Stay tuned…
