La Vega football standout arrested in robbery

Chris.Parr.jpg

A standout La Vega High School football player is in the McLennan County Jail today after allegedly pulling a gun on another teen to steal his hat and shoes.

Christopher Dantae Parr, 17, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of aggravated robbery, said Bellmead Police Chief Robert Harold. The incident happened about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 5200 block of Concord Road, he said.

Investigators believe three or four juveniles were involved but they have not yet been identified, he said.

The victim, Lonnie Sawyer, 19, was walking in the street when the robbery happened, Harold said. Sawyer’s residence is nearby, he said.

Parr allegedly pulled up in a vehicle and got out, holding a “large black handgun,” Bellmead police say. He proceeded to rob Sawyer of the clothing items at gunpoint, Harold said.

Asked if Sawyer knew Parr, Harold said he did because Parr is on the La Vega football team.

Parr, a junior, was to be the featured running back for the Pirates, picked by Texas Football magazine as the favorite this year to win the Class 3A, Division II title. Parr rushed for 1,762 yards and 18 touchdowns last year as a sophomore behind his brother Kourtney, who graduated.

Head coach Willie Williams said he could not comment on the case or whether Parr would be playing for the team Friday night when La Vega hosts Marlin in its season opener.

Parr is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond on the charge, a jail official said.

What an idiot. a pair of shoes which probably didn’t fit him anyway. maybe it’s better that something happened now rather than later when he’s making alot of money playing a game and thinks he’s above the law. Maybe just maybe he can learn from this act of stupidity and get another chance. But only one more chance!

What a shame. My nephew in NC had a full ticket to college to play football. He decided he has having too much fun partying, missed his chance and is now going from one minimum wage job to another. Thought he was smarter than his mom.

If this were the first or even 2nd time Parr found himself in trouble, maybe I’d think diferently. But very simply, when is enough ENOUGH? Athletics in HS is a privilege, not a right. Why would that privilege even be offered again in this instance? To rehabilitate…not much of a chance there considering what has happened in the past. Unfortunately, I will be quite surprised if he is not back on the La Vega team “leading the way”. What in the world is that going to say to the rest of his teammates and community?

First of all, IF this is true, it is truly sad. Once again though, people are crucifying without all the facts…ALLEGEDLY, I believe it says. Although I am inclined to think it is true, I’d like to be certain before I condemn him. Is it unreasonable to think he has a target on him? Any number of people would love to see him fail and be locked up…especially given the history. I’d really love for them to prove it wasn’t true, that would really shock some people. Anyway, it is a very sad thing for ANY KID, let alone one with a lot of potential, but especially for the rest of the team, school and community. If he’s out, he’s out…rest of the team will just have to move on and get the job done. Go Pirates!

It would be sad and a dang shame if Parr even contributed to the team like all the other players do. It would be a dang shame if Parr actually attended all the practices and gave 100%. Last but not least it would be a dang shame if Parr actually put his awesome talent to use. Parr is a great athlete, but by no means a great student nor role model for any of the little fans who go out to support the Pirates each week. I sure hope Coach Williams does not allow this Parr to slip by and appear back on the Pirate scene. Now the team can actually be a team without anyone trying to be the STAR on the football team and I believe the Pirates can do it without Parr. I think the team can get the job done without him.. it might be a little harder, but it is possible!

First of all i think the community is already found him guilty. chris has a lot of potential and have a lot of positive things going for him and positive people in his corner. also he has a lot of negative people that are waiting for him to fail. he did not do this and he will be one day playing football again maybe not for lavega but for you football fans on SUNDAYS.SO STAY TUNED. AND THANKS FOR ALL THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS THAT JUST MAKES US FIGHT A LITTLE BIT HARDER TO GET WHERE WERE GOING.

Hey Keli, You are a perfect example of why La Vega is considered un educated thugs. If you are going to represent your school and put your name on something at least have a little pride in yourself and use correct grammer. Hopefully one day you’ll realize that you are making yourself and those around you look like lower class, uneducated, idiots by writing and talking like this. I’m sure there are many good students and adults in La Vega but unfortunately those who choose to talk and act this way overshadow the good ones.

If he is in need of clothing, he can get a job. He’s old enough. My sons are still in high school and in order to buy the expensive Jordans, they work. There is no way I will pay that much for a pair of tennis shoes that, by their standards, will be out of style in a couple of months.

I have dealt with this kid directly, and I’m sorry to say this, but I’m not surprised at all. It’s a shame because he has all the talent in the world. People don’t need to make excuses for this young man. I tried to do just that for a long time, and soon realized that there were none. It is time that he stop being allowed to take advantage of the coaches and staff at LaVega that have bent over backwards to help him straighten his life out. Enough is enough. No amount of talent is worth allowing a kid like this to represent your school. It is a sad situation, but trust me, this kid does not want help. He’s been offered it too many times and continued with the same behavior.

As a former LaVega student I attended school with a number of members of the Parr family. Each possesed their own ability to break each and every satndard set forth by govrened society. In this case the suspect should not get another chance becasue it will just put another inncent victim at risk. Personally I think the entire family shold be indicted to save us all the trouble of arresting them as they commit their numerous crimes. For those who think I am being racist or profiling in any way I say to you, how many times were you robbed, thretned, or did you witness a member of this family violate the law because I personally have experienced these incidents first hand on over 10 occasions. So good luck on another stent in the big house chris, but make sure not to burn too many bridges because you will be back in a short time.

Actually, my mom/dad/coach would of whooped my a&& if I stepped out of the house with a cut like that.

Just in case he didn’t do it, how many individuals find themselves being accussed of robbing someone for their shoes and hat…

People need to stop making excuses for Chris Parr. I have dealt with this kid directly, and I tried over and over again to reach him and help him turn his life around, with no success. In fact, he was the most ungrateful child I have ever dealt with. It is time that he not be allowed to take further advantage of the coaches and staff at LaVega who have bent over backwards for him. Sometimes you just have to say enough is enough. It’s not that Chris Parr has never had a chance to learn right from wrong. I tried to teach him myself. It’s that he has never had to deal with the consequences of doing wrong, and it’s about time he does. No amount of talent is worth letting this kid represent your team and school.

I would like to say that I have seen first hand the talent that Chris has. He if he would pull his head out of his a** would be a tremendous benefit to any college. But, it seems that LaVega spells team ” PARR”. There are so many talented kids on that team with big dreams of making it big. To the rest of the young men on that team hold your head high and keep reaching for your dreams. If Coach Williams is to play Chris that would surely tell the community and the boys who work hard and give 100% that Coach Williams is only interested in Parr. I would like to wish the rest of the team the best of luck in this season and stay healthy and get your education not probation.

chirs parr has an amazing talent. but, in my opinion it is wasted. simply because he abuses his talent. he thinks that just because he’s a good football player, he can get away with anything. it’s not his fault though. i blame his parents and his coaches. they let him get away with things in the past but, hopefully the coaching staff will no longer let that be the case. we MUST teach this boy a lesson.

For the record, this is by far not the first mistake Chris Parr has ever made. This GROWN MAN, yes, grown man (he’s 18) has been in trouble with the police for years now. He has been a career criminal for alot longer than most of you know. Congratulations to Bellmead PD and Chief Harold for finally placing a publice nuisance where he belongs. Parr has been terrorizing the citizens of the east side of Bellmead for the past two years. Now we don’t have to worry about a “thug” running around sticking guns in our faces for our clothing. And the other students that posted comments on here are the reason that LaVega has the “uneducated thug” reputation that it has. Looks like Bellmead hasn’t changed a bit.

I think that this is a very unfortunate situation and I will first say that you are innocent until proven guilty. The alleged victim of this situation I will say if it actually happened Chris deserves exactly what he gets because it is wrong. I think that there is a bigger picture here and I think that Chris is also a victim because he is a outstanding football player and I don’t think that he is getting the guidance that he needs to deal with the notarity that he is getting. Alot of times athletes think that they can do what they want to do when they are “STARS” because “adults” allow them to feel as if they don’t have to pay for what they do. I think it is his responsibility to better his life and make good decisions but it is also the parents, the educators at the school, coaches, ministers, and the community as well should take responsibility as well. Last year you could not beat the community boosting Chris up because he was needed (no matter what you say now) to get to the playoffs and now that this alleged incident has happened then “everyone” listed above wants to throw him to the wolves. That’s the way it normally goes. I will say again that if he did this he is wrong and should pay for what he did but maybe this is a lesson learned not to just Chris but people that is involved in other athletes life who are troubled. “Chris” to you I say that if you are guilty then if you feel as if everyone else has failed you then when you have noone else you always have God. People are always subject to let you down but God will never fail you. May God Bless You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At CS, he would be a work horse and the white boys would get all the credit for it. I know for a fact at the state game last year a black senior did not play one minute of the game but had been in the paper before with an interception helping them get to state so he’d be better off getting out of jail and going back where he’d get credit for his work.

No one thought it was fair but no one did anything about it because he was such a big football star. He has no respect for others and obviously no respect for himself. I’m really glad that he’s behind bars. It’s people like him that give LaVega the horrible reputation we have. I personaly he sorry for him. He had so much potentional. I would love to believe that Chris could change his ways if he were just given a chance, but I know personally that he has been given so many, and taken advantage of them all. This is a kid that brags about the horrible things he does. Maybe he wasn’t taught right from wrong at home, but he’s been in a school system FULL of people who have tried to teach him the difference, and he just doesn’t care. I used to believe that you could change every kid if you just loved them and showed them a better way, and unfortunately, Chris taught me different. Sometimes, people really just don’t want to do the right thing, even when they know full well what it is, and that, I’m afraid, is what we have in this young man. You can say “alleged” all day, but if you know Chris at all, you know this is all too familiar. I hate it. It’s a waste. It’s a sad, sad thing, but it is what it is, and it’s time he has to deal with it.

In your interview with the trib you said you have something new this year… Yeah what is it an orange jump suit? We were expecting a record breaking year Parr not this ridiculous stunt. You not only screwed yourself you let your whole community down. This could have been YOUR year. What were you thinking? Hat & shoes? Give me a break!

This just shows how ignorant once again how people can be! Why would someone with so much potential do something so stupid! And to top it off it would be the LV fans to be in denial about the whole thing! Im pretty sure ALL of BELLMEAD knows exactly how Parr is! Its not a big shock to me at all! Your football team is going to be just fine! And for whoever that was that said “keep thuggin”. You wonder why people prejudge you. Your just making yourself, community, and your school look very bad! Stop, Think, and Grow up! Theres a time to be serious and a time to goof off…This is not the time to say stuff like that! Because Parr has so much potential I really hope he learns from this situation! He could really make it big! Im really praying for him and his family!

I think I just got dumber by reading some of these posts. I mean, some of them are so ridiculous I think they are plants. Seriously.

As for a 3.6 GPA….well, if they were teaching me my primary colors as a Senior in high school, I’d like to think I’d be doing pretty good as well! Obama in ‘08! Ha. What a joke.

Real talk..whatever happened..happened. He made a mistake [[like who doesnt]], it just so happens he is a star athlete. Keep yo head up bro .prey for the best.and dont worry about all these fakes. They are a prime example of racial profiling. Chris might be a thug. that doesnt mean downgrade my bro like that…..

As a LV parent & fan this is very unfortunate for all parties involved. To my understanding there is a prior history with C.Parr, another family member & this victim. Nevertheless, we all have to take responsibilty for our OWN actions and choose wisely. My prayers are with the victim & his family, C.Parr & his family, and our LV football players & Coaches. With that said, the Beat Goes On. One monkey does not stop a show! There are several other really good football players on the team that can help us win STATE such as “AB” Aaron Brandon, an awesome runningback who gave us a taste of what he can do during both the CS & Gatesville scrimmage. To name a few more we have QB Danzel Wilson, middle linebacker “CJ” Willis, WR Daxton Swanson, CB Chad Ward & many others. We have to believe in ALL of the players b/c circumstances will come and we cannot afford to put our faith in only 1 player. It’s a TEAM! And it takes a TEAM to WIN. CALLING ALL PLAYERS & COACHES….KEEP YOUR HEAD UP, YOUNG MEN COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS BY WALKING IN YOUR CALLING. If you feel you were born to be a football player then Let’s play some ball! NOW MAKE IT HAPPEN! Love you guys, stay focus & believe it or not C.Parr would want you to continue on, it would make him proud. And to Coach Williams sometimes you just have to have tough love, for some this is the only way we learn. Be Stern, Be Fair & Be a Man of your Word by treating all of “your boys” as equals. In God’s eyes there are NO BIG I’s and little u’s. Much Love & Respect.

* TO ALL THE PREJUDICE OBVIOUSLY WHITE PEOPLE POSTING DUMBA$$ REMARKS: There are so many of you who act, dress, *try to talk, try to sing, try to rap, try to dance like BLACKS it’s unreal. I live in CS and guess what you all ride up & down the streets blasting rap & R&B all the time. So, tell me whose really a Thug? Just b/c you can hide behind your money or your parents money doesn’t mean your life isn’t as raggedy as the lower class blacks if not worse. And guess what else, your children are the most disrespectful children on earth. They talk to their parents as if they were absolutely nothing & to you all it’s okay. It’s not being dierespectful or thuggish, they’re just expressing themselves. “Way to go for freedom of speech” Whatever. Just keep your dumb comments b/c being a thug is not a race it’s a way of living that every race has an issue with.

I can’t understand why anyone would be shocked or surprised by typical Bellmead mentality. And hey Pirate Parent and Fan. You’re a bit too primed and ready to throw the race flag on this play. Nobody has yet to mention the tribal mentality that obviously over ruled common sense here.

This kid is a sad story. Hopefully he can get his life together. However, his football story is over. Hes going to jail, and he should. Hes a menace. Hopefully he can figure out something else to do with his life.
