G.L. Wiley students arriving for class

The kids are pouring into G.L. Wiley Middle School this morning as if none of the controversy of the last few weeks ever took place. By 7:45 a.m., a total of about 30 kids were standing in line to get signed in or were already in the cafeteria eating breakfast.

“That’s actually more than I expected this early,” said Wiley principal Kermit Ward. School begins at 8:30 a.m.

However, only one bus had arrived on campus by 8:30, and most of the students get to the school via bus.

On Thursday Judge Jim Meyer of the 170th District Court signed a temporary restraining order overturning the Waco Independent School District board vote to close Wiley. Waco ISD staff worked furiously after that to get the school ready for today.

Ward was fielding hugs from students and parents alike on the front steps of the school.

Some parents said their children were already registered at Carver, which enrolls a large number of Wiley-zoned students, but they chose to return to Wiley when they heard it would be open.

Central office administrators were ready to man classrooms and a few familiar faces, former Wiley teachers, had even been rounded up to be with the kids today.

Area pastors and school board members lingered at the front of the school to welcome families back to the reopened campus.

Best wishes to the students and faculty at Wiley. However this turns out, whether they stay at Wiley or not, they are in my heart. I hope they seize the best education they can….it will affect their lives and the lives of their children in the future and our whole community. God Bless the children! Bh

What a great use of my money!

Opening a school, feeding the students, paying the faculty and staff, and keeping all the lights and air conditioning on, for what? 30 students according to the article. How much did that set the district back today?

Are you kidding me?!?!

You’re right, Lester, et al, it’s racist for wanting to give these kids a better education, isn’t it? In order to preserve their “african-american” cultural identity let’s send them to a failing school. That will bring everyone together, won’t it?

Since when do children get a say in what’s best for them? If you ask kids what they want to do, they’ll say stay home and play video games.

When are the responsible adults going to take charge of the situation and do what’s right?

Close that failing school and send those kids somewhere where they actually might get some semblance of an education!

Oh, wait, I hear Lester calling me a racist again.

Idiot.

My only question is this. Was Lester and wife, Alex Williams, and Larry Perez there this morning to help with all needed. Even if some parents show up, will you continue this support for the whole year. Teaching is not only a book issue, but what the kids see from us the parent. As we do, so will they later. Sometimes change is better, our pride refuses to see that.

Everyone making negative statements don’t know what your talking about. You guys keep talking about Lester Gibson and not sure what he has done in the pass with or for Wiley. FYI He helped with sending kids to different historical places throughtout states. Lester and his wife traveled with these kids. These kids were from Wiley! People making negative comments just came on board and don’t have any intention helping the situation and should just keep it to your self. They may have not been there but it doesn’t mean they don’t care. Pray for the families. Amen.

Maybe Mr. & Mrs. Gibson’s time would have been better utilized not taking other kids around the states but spending time instilling values and respect for the law in their own children.

Like teaching their own children that a drug dealing thug life will only end in sorrow for all involved. Come to think of it I do not want my kids around that kind of element. Nor would I want parenting advice from Billy Wayne Coble’s mother, I too see how her son turned out.

To “A Proper Edumacation” there are a lot of parents who teach their children right from wrong, teach them to respect others at all times, they take them to church and they teach them to read their Bibles and honor God’s word. These children may know every book of the Bible (New and Old Testament) and in the proper sequence and may be able to quote several scriptures and tell you the exact place to find that scripture.

My point is, we all know that sometimes a person will reach a certain age and start to feel that they are adults and no longer have to abide by their parents rules. They will then go out and experiment with or do the things their parents told them were not favorable. I agree that there are people who come from families where they did not receive proper guidance and because of this they made some serious mistakes.

When a person reaches a certain age and is capable of supporting themselves and making reasonable decisions (whether they do or not) then I don’t feel it is the parent’s fault if their son or daughter decides to go out and do something that is against the law. It doesn’t mean they were not raised properly.

I am sure if you look back you will find that there have been a few things (maybe not to that extent) that you have done that weren’t favorable. Am I wrong?

Have a Blessed Day!
