‘Redeem Team’ wins Olympic hoops gold, 118-107
America is back on the top of the Olympic podium in basketball — but it wasn’t easy.
In by far its toughest game of the Olympic tournament, the U.S. defeated Spain, 118-107, in the gold-medal match today in Beijing.
The American team had been called the “Redeem Team” because of its quest to regain the gold after the U.S. managed only the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
The U.S. led by as little as two in the second half, and Spain missed a 3-pointer that would have cut the lead to three with about two minutes to play.
Kobe Bryant scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to help ensure the American victory. Bryant had 20 points in the game, second-highest on the team behind Dwayne Wade’s 27.
The U.S. defeated Spain, 119-82, in pool play, but got a much tougher test this time. Rudy Fernandez scored 22 points, and Pau Gasol, Bryant’s Los Angeles Laker teammate, had 21.
Earlier today Argentina beat Lithuania, 87-75, for the bronze medal.
