Tokio Store loses out on proposal

A proposal this morning that tried to solve a neighborhood dispute about traffic and noise outside the Tokio Store was shot down with a “no” vote by County Judge Jim Lewis.

The store last month lost its beer permit because of protests by area residents who claim the bar is a public nuisance, with loud music and rowdy patrons. They also say the traffic and parking situation around the bar is dangerous, with patrons frequently blocking the road with their vehicles.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Joe Mashek proposed abandoning a 55-by-240-foot section of Tokio Loop that runs in front of the store and allowing store owners Charles and Deborah Kirkpatrick to purchase that section and use it for parking.

The rest of Tokio Loop would be tied into adjacent Old Railroad Road, according to the proposal.

Commissioners Mashek, Ray Meadows and Lester Gibson voted in favor of the proposal (Wendall Crunk was absent), but Lewis voted against it, which killed the proposal because a state statute requires the vote be unanimous.

Lewis said he had safety concerns about a road that suddenly stopped and would have parked cars there.

Also during the meeting, patrol Sgt. Mylie Hudson read a letter of support for Sheriff Larry Lynch in response to negative publicity the sheriff received in recent weeks over county discussions about privatization of the jails.

Hudson touted improvement under Lynch’s watch as well as his honesty and integrity. The letter was signed by about 75 McLennan County Sheriff’s Office employees.

Praise the Lord. I am glad to see this headline, with all the DWI in this county, why would these people want to contribute to that type of behavior is beyond me. I suppose the store owners are the type of people who are always blaming someone else for the drunk drivers,I would not want that on my conscience. Thank you Judge.

It’s not the store or the owners who drink and drive. It is soley the responsibility of the patrons. Get a grip! Should they close down Logan’s, Applebee’s, Hooters, every place that serves a drink? I hate it that one old grouch put a family out of business.

It sounds to me like Judge Jim Lewis needs to be voted out of office, or better yet impeached, “unaminous vote”, what a joke, if that’s the real DEMOCRATIC WAY, we the people, not the POLITICIANS need to re-write the laws of this country!

Just a case of not “greasing the palm”. Shoud have thrown something under the table and I’ll bet old Lewis would have broke his hand signing the papers to get their beer back.

Does anyone believe the support letter was genuine? The officers had a gun to their head when they signed it. Several were coerced. So 10 or 20 percent of the department supports him? George Bush has better numbers and he does not hide behind his granddaughter or in his office. Honesty and integrity do not belong in any sentence referring to the sheriff. Larry or Randy must have written it. To the signatories, integrity and character are not free. The only thing worse than selling out is being to stupid to know when you have been compromised.

Guess Lewis couldn’t figure out how to make some money off the deal.

@ Taco If Larry was running the war, he would want it outsourced to Blackwater. Only in Larry’s department could you have a guy accidentally shoot himself with a duty weapon and now he is a Lieutenant. How about the Sgt. who was responsible for background investigations and hired a jailer with 3 outstanding arrest warrants Here is the link. Then there are the political contributors that he hired. If that is the department definition of honesty and integrity, we are in big trouble.

I know one thing for sure, Larry Lynch is the biggest joke of a sherrif any way, he has no idea what goes on in that jail at hwy 6 , the jailers are all brown nozers, all they do is sit around and eat all day and night ,,,I for one wished they would have fired all of them they get paid for doing nothing I`d cry also to lose such an easy job,I know from seeing the way they treat people.
