Science fiction fans pick their favorites
DENVER — An alternate-history Alaska, a journey to the land of faerie and (almost) back, and the frightening truth behind those weeping-angel statues took top honors from science fiction fans Saturday night.
Among the winners of the Hugo Awards, given annually at the World Science Fiction Convention, was the film Stardust, starring Charlie Cox, Claire Danes and Robert DeNiro and based on the Neil Gaiman novel about a young man who pursues a falling star into Faerie and finds that it is actually a she.
The TV Hugo went to the “Doctor Who” episode “Blink,” a mind-eating time-travel story in which a woman battles alien hunters disguised as statues.
Among the literary prizes, the Hugo for best novel went to Michael Chabon’s The Yiddish Policemen’s Union, a mystery set in a world where Israel does not exist and Jewish refugees gather in an Alaska reservation. Other winners included stories by Connie Willis, Ted Chiang and Elizabeth Bear.
The rocket-shaped Hugo is named after pioneering SF editor Hugo Gernsback. More winners and more information are at the Worldcon Web site.

Youth baseball coach accused of sexual assault arrested in Mexico
Mexican authorities arrested William Thomas Jacobsen — the former Little River-Academy youth baseball coach accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old player — and his wife, Marilyn Wesson on Saturday, the Bell County Sheriff’s Office announced.
Jacobsen, 31, and Wesson, 57, were wanted on outstanding Bell County and federal warrants.
According to a statement released by the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, Nuevo Laredo police participated in a lengthy surveillance of the couple after videos and photos of the pair at a pawn shop at the Laredo-Mexico border surfaced in early July.
Both were transported to the International Bridge in Laredo, where they were released to U.S. authorities and transferred to Webb County Jail in Laredo.
Jacobsen is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child, and Wesson is charged with hindering apprehension.
Additionally, U.S. Marshals have charged both Jacobsen and Wesson with interstate flight to avoid prosecution.
Both will be transferred to Bell County later this week.
Jacobsen and Wesson fled the Little River-Academy area June 21, four days before Bell County sheriff’s officials issued a warrant for his arrest.

A Waco man was killed early this morning while attempting to flee from police, authorities say.
Bobby Vaughn Jr., 33, died after the SUV he was driving struck a tree at the corner of 34th Street and Ethel Avenue around 2 a.m., a Waco police spokesman said.
Vaughn was attending a party in the 2700 block of Ethel early Saturday morning when he assaulted his cousin, the spokesman said.
Waco police officers responded to a report of a fight, and Vaughn, attempting to escape from the police, jumped into an SUV and fled westbound on Ethel, the spokesman said.
Vaughn lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of 34th and Ethel, struck a tree and rolled the SUV, killing him instantly.
Vaughn’s wife, Micole Fletcher, was in the passenger seat of the SUV and was transported to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries, the spokesman said.
Her condition is unknown at this time.
