5 more arrested from west Texas polygamist sect
AUSTIN, Texas — A state law enforcement official says five indicted members of a polygamist sect in West Texas have turned themselves in to authorities.
The official, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, was not authorized to talk on the record until after a news conference by Attorney General Greg Abbott later Monday.
The five men were indicted last week with Warren Jeffs, the already-jailed leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Jeffs and four others were charged in Texas with felony sexual assault of a child. The fifth was charged with failing to report child abuse. One of the five was also charged with bigamy.
The official says the men turned themselves in in Schleicher (SHLY-ker) County, where the FLDS runs the Yearning For Zion Ranch.
