Cameron youths charged in burglary spree

Two 14-year-old Cameron boys remain in jail this morning after authorities say they went on a two-week burglary spree that spanned two counties.

From July 4 until they were arrested July 18, Cameron Police Chief Patrick Guffy said the boys stole up to eight vehicles and burglarized at least two buildings.

Their parents, Guffy said, told police they were unaware of their sons’ criminal activity, as the boys would check home at various times.

The boys are being held at the Rockdale juvenile justice center on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and burglary. Guffy was not certain how many counts of each charge would stick as far as court proceedings. He said other charges may be added as Cameron, Rockdale and Milam and Bell county officials continue their investigations.

Guffy said the boys — one of which lived in Cameron and the other elsewhere in Milam County — stole vehicles in which the key was left in the car and the doors were left unlocked.

Guffy said, “They were mainly just joy-riding.” The boys took the vehicles to Wal-Mart and various gas stations.
