Tributes flow for DeBakey; memorial service today
Houstonians will honor the legacy of Dr. Michael DeBakey, often referred to as the father of modern heart surgery, during a public memorial service today, the Associated Press reports.
Tributes to DeBakey, recalling his work as a pioneering heart surgeon, medical innovator and educator — have been constant since his death last week.
Ten speakers, from former students and collaborators to leaders within the famed Texas Medical Center, were scheduled to speak at the afternoon service.
DeBakey died of natural causes Friday at the age of 99.
On Tuesday, many who would not attend his funeral service got a chance to pay their respects to DeBakey as his body lay in repose in Houston City Hall.
Here’s coverage from the Houston Chronicle.
