Local FBI agent indicted in dog’s death

Lovett.Ledger.jpg

Local FBI agent Lovett Leslie Ledger was indicted by the McLennan County grand jury this morning on a cruelty to animals charge, a state jail felony, in the killing of a Chihuahua in his neighborhood.

Ledger, 39, allegedly shot the dog, named Sassy, with a pump pellet gun in front of his home near Lorena on Feb. 29.

If convicted of a state jail felony, Ledger faces 180 days to two years in a state jail and a fine of up to $10,000.

Five witnesses testified before the grand jury, including Ledger and his wife, Jacqueline. Les Ledger testified for about 25 minutes; his wife for 10.

Grand jurors also heard from the dog’s owner, Jason Davis, and McLennan County Sheriff’s Lt. Clay Perry.

Ledger’s attorney, Rob Swanton, declined to comment after hearing of the indictment. Prosecutor Crawford Long also declined comment.

In a previous story in the Tribune-Herald, a neighbor who said she was home the afternoon of the incident said she heard her dogs barking and went outside to see Sassy walking on Estes Road.

The dog lurched to one side upon being shot, then rolled into a yard, where she died, the neighbor said.

The neighbor also said she saw Ledger lower the pellet gun and walk inside his home with one of his children. A group of people gathered around the dog, and the neighbor said she could see a hole in Sassy’s neck above her pink rhinestone collar.

They need to fry this sicko. Maximum sentence, maximum fine. This is a horrible tragedy to the family of this pet. To think that a “man” would abuse his FBI marksman training to kill his neighbors little chihuahua is a gross display of humanity! Send this loser to prison.

As a retired law enforcement officer I am ashamed that this “agent” lacked the discipline to control himself. I sincerely hope that the bureau takes away his credentials regardless of the outcome of this case.

I don’t think he should be punished the dog should not have been roaming the streets or even loose. The owned should be charge with neglect for the dog getting out. Now if the dog had bitten someone the owner would have been heard accountable. I say “OH Well, ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN!”

God Bless Sassy’s family! Not that it would not be hard enough for this Mr and Mrs to go thru, I sure hope they do not have children they had to tell that a 250 pound man who is supposed to protect them has shot their Chihuahua (3 pounds or 5 pounds). You know, this leads me to think this man probably has a history of shooting innocent animals if he can shoot a 3 to 5 pound animal that is harmless. FBI agent, get a job behind a desk! You deserve it!!!

I doubt he’ll be sentenced for shooting a nuisance dog on the loose in his neighborhood. After all, he has the health and safety of his children to consider. Nice shot, though. I wish there were more details about the pellet gun he used and distance to the target. I have a open-sighted Crossman that has 6 cats to its credit from my back porch. I think they all had rabies.

You can tell the civilization of a nation by the way it treats its animals. You idiots that think the dog deserved it because it was not fenced in need a lesson in humanity. That dog belonged to a child and there were several alternate ways the situation could’ve been handled. This small neighborhood is out in the country and most everyone lets their dogs out sometimes.

“You can tell the civilization of a nation by the way it treats its animals.” KD

Now that’s sad. The true measure of a civilization is based upon the way it treats its weakest citizens, not its animals.

There is clearly breed discrimination and unapologetic double-standards when a loose dog is a chihuahua or a pit bull. These doggie racists should be lynched.

I was out for a walk in my neighborhood a couple of weeks ago, and a little pug came up behind me and nipped at my heels for a full ten minutes. If I’d had a bat or a pellet gun, I wouldn’t have hesitated to use it.

I’m amazed at the comments above. I’d expected informed citizens to understand that the facts of the case were not completely reported. The man has been indicted. He’s not been convicted. I think it’s a shame the dog died. I don’t know (and neither do you all) if he previously warned the neighbor about her dog. I don’t know if he had shot the dog before to scare it away without doing any damage. Perhaps the dog had bitten his children, and the paper didn’t get that information. I think the jury should decide. After all, that’s why we have them.

I request the maximum penalty for Leslie Ledger. I have been watching this case since the beginning of march. He killed a helpless animal, someone’s beloved pet, that was absolutely no threat to him. Then, he lied to authorities claiming he did not do it, only to confess when there was a witness. In addition, another neighbor believes strongly that he killed her dog as well, she just doesn’t have solid proof. I expect the FBI to have higher standards, I will lose all respect for the FBI, if he remains an agent. Should we have FBI agents that like to torture helpless innocent creatures? Should FBI agents lie? America deserves better, we need to demand better.

By chihuahuahater

I don’t like chihuahua’s,believe they’re a waste of skin as far as a dog is concerned. That being said, I love dogs, and I have even rescued a few chihuahuas in spite of my distaste for the breed.

Those of you who are saying “Why wasn’t the dog in the fence” and “Blame the dog’s owner”….GROW UP. Dogs can slip out of fences leashes and other enclosures. This was not the dog’s fault, and this man acted in a cruel fashion. Why not call animal control authorities instead of shooting the animal. There were many other ways that this could have been handled.

I hope the FBI takes away this man’s career. I certainly would not want a hothead like this in the position of being an FBI agent…..

If he just happens to go to prison it better not be for more than two years! I would shot any dog that came in my yard around my kids. Drunken girl kills cousin, people say let her go. Man kills ugly little yapping, never shut up Chihuahua and you want this man to get the “death penalty”. (For those who think I mean death penalty for real, I was using a metaphor)

Many of these comments are too emotional and off the deep end. It’s ridiculous to consider a dog who weighs 3-4 lbs a threat to society who needs to be destroyed. The dog was not hurting anyone. Yes, he should have been fenced, but sometimes our pets get out before we realize it. This man is a federal employee. He is supposed to be mature and display behavior of good citizenship, not abuse his position. And his lies indicate he knew he was wrong. If he felt the dog was a problem, he could have called the owner, or even animal control. He is not suitable to be in a position of law enforcement on any level. A person or society who doesn’t care for the animals God has entrusted to us, also cannot be trusted to care for human citizens. Blessings to the little girl and her family.

Pretty sad, listening to some of you hotheads on here. This man is a college graduate and a federal law enforcement agent, keeping our communities safe. He pumps a pellet rifle up to sting a nuisance dog in the butt to scare it off his property and the thin skinned little dog gets wounded and dies…which was most likely not his intention. Now his career is over, and with a felony conviction, he will never work in Law Enforcement again, and may even do some jail time… Sad…real sad…a life and career ruined over an accident.. And for the record, he never lied to law enforcement, and there is no accusation that he lied to law enforcement.. Some of you are pathetic to hang a good guy out to dry over something so trivial.. Maybe he should have left a bowl of antifreeze out for the dog…that’s cruelty, a sting in the butt with a BB is not cruelty.. There are plenty of dogs chained on 3 foot chains all over this town, without adequate food and water…that’s cruelty. This was an accident..

July 10, 2008 3:54 PM | Link to this

“Reasonable citizen” What paper have you been reading? The Waco Trib clearly states that it was a pellet gun not a BB gun. It also clearly states that he initially lied to law enforcement when questioned. I’m sure being a trained FBI agent he knew that you can easily kill samll animal with a pellet gun. Accident ha! And the dog was not on his property. Get your facts straight!

Hey Mr. Reasonable-you are right about chains. That’s incredibly cruel and those people should be punished also. But what stories have you been reading? Even this guy never said it was an accident. People like him (and possibly you also) are why many people prefer so-called “animals” over so-called “people”. Who’s the beast?

I don’t know. That dog could have had a knife or been out looking for a chain saw to steal so he could run around sawing on folk’s ankles. I agree with Mister Mojo though. That was one hell of a shot with a pellet rifle.

We’re talking about a freakin dog here. I think we have better things to worry about and now one less law enforcement officer on the streets to tend to those “better things”. This trial will be a waste of tax payer money.

By "Reasonable" citizen

KD…I’m sure you know everything the WacoTrib publishes is completely, 100% factual too..”ROLLEYES HERE”.. The news sources report what they “hear” from sometimes reliable, and sometimes “unreliable” sources… He didn’t lie to anyone, and isn’t being charged with lying to anyone.

And there is no difference between a BB gun and a pellet gun…”no difference”! Pellet guns shoot BB’s or Pellets..one is round, one is shaped like a little cup…who knows whether it was a BB or a pellet that took FooFoo’s life… Only the doggy-coroner knows..

What he did was a bad decision, and in bad taste, but not worth destroying a man’s career and life over..embarrasing him and his family etc.. I guess everyone has forgotten the dog’s owner’s responsibility to keep her dog on her property.. I think if they are going to go full-throttle on Agent Ledger, they should charge her too for “Failure to control an animal”…it was a state statue in Georgia when I lived there, don’t know if Texas has one similar, but it should be applied here too…since we’re going to “Extremes” here..
