Brazos Belle sinks again

The Brazos Belle riverboat has sunk again, and workers are pumping out water this afternoon in an effort to raise the vessel.

The Belle has a new owner who planned to move the vessel, according to Waco City Manager Larry Groth.

The boat has fallen on hard times because of flooding, and had its docking lease with the city cancelled last year because of delinquent taxes and a failure by the previous owner to make lease payments.

The city threatened to have the boat moved and sold for back taxes if no one claimed responsibility for it by summer.

The riverboat became mired in mud during last spring’s heavy rains, and the downstairs ballroom was swamped.

The Brazos Belle has been permanently docked on the Brazos Riverwalk near Interstate 35 since 1997, but in its later years it was used only occasionally for events.

The boat and its predecessor, the Brazos Queen I, once took dinner guests up and down Lake Brazos.

Taco, I assume you would prefer a scenario in which the City was quick to claim imminent domain and go about seizing private property in the name of the public good? I wish the Belle were gone too, but I much prefer that the City be very thorough and even slow when taking private property. Especially when issues of ownership are present.

Paint the Brazos Belle GREEN and GOLD and put a litte Bear on the mast.

Both Baylor and the silly boatmcan’t seem to stay out of trouble or the Waco Trib headlines.

Move them both out of Waco. We will all be better off.

Taking over an abandoned eyesore of a boat and taking over a family’s homestead to build a strip mall are slightly different situation, I’d like to think.
