Baylor freshman makes ESPN ‘warrior list’

Bruce Feldman with ESPN the Magazine unveiled the Top 10 list of offseason “Freaks” (though meant in a good way), who are expected to excel for their college football teams.

Making No. 4 on the list is Baylor’s Robert Griffin, the true freshman from Copperas Cove, who bypassed the rest of his senior year in high school to begin spring workouts at Baylor and run track. In fact, he’s running for Baylor in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships that start today.

Here’s the link to the full list, but below is what Feldman wrote about Griffin:

Robert Griffin, Baylor, QB: A 6-3, 200-pound true freshman, Griffin enrolled early and will battle for the starting QB job in the fall. A few weeks ago, “Rambo” displayed his blazing speed for the Bears track team by winning the Big 12 400-meter hurdles title at the conference outdoor championships with a personal-best and national-leading time of 49.22, making for a very rare double of QB-hurdler. Griffin is a legitimate threat to make the Olympics someday as a hurdler. New Baylor coach Art Briles describes Griffin as a “unique blend of athleticism.” That’s putting it mildly.

He won’t be making the Olympic team after he gets his knees blown out in football. Too bad. Think- Joe Namath, Joe Theismann, Jim Kelly, or just about any of the other jillions of QB’s who ended up in DonJoy knee braces. Football is a sport that trades ligaments and cartilage for bowl bids. The modern day Roman Coliseum.
