Volunteer firefighter arrested in Marlin arson

ERIC NUTT.JPG
The Falls County Sheriff’s Office has charged a 25-year-old volunteer firefighter with arson and making a false report or alarm, according to Sheriff Ben Kirk.

The arrest resulted from a sheriff’s office investigation into a string of numerous vacant structure fires and unfounded reports of fires in the Marlin area, according to a sheriff’s office release.

Eric Nutt was arrested by sheriff’s deputies and charged with one count of arson, a second-degree felony, in connection with a March 19 structure fire on County Road 2877 south of Marlin, according to the release.

The building was vacant at the time the fire was intentionally set, the release said. Area volunteer fire departments extinguished the blaze.

Nutt also was charged with one count of false alarm or report, a Class A misdemeanor, for a March 7 incident reporting a grass fire on County Road 226 southeast of Marlin. Firefighters were dispatched, but the 9-1-1 call was determined to be a false report.

The state fire marshal’s office assisted in the investigation.

Nutt was released after posting $1,000 bail on each charge, Kirk said.
