Storm hits Waco but saves worst for Bell County

Joseph Abbott — alias “Joe Weather” — and staff writer Emily Ingram have filed this report about this evening’s dramatic storm:

Wacoans skirted the worst this afternoon as storms dumped rain and some hail on the area, even as the more severe thunderstorms and tornadoes blew south of McLennan County.

In Bell County, five tornadoes touched down about 6 p.m. in the Belton area, a Bell County Sheriff’s spokeswoman told the Tribune-Herald.

No injuries or property damage were reported, and Belton Police Officer Dane Kantro said there had been no confirmed tornadoes inside Belton city limits.

Friday’s gloomy weather continues through the weekend, though with less chance of tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.

Today will start clear but, as evening looms, so will a 90 percent chance of more thunderstorms. By Sunday afternoon, the chance of storms will drop to about 20 percent.

The rest of the week promises to be sunny with highs in the low 80s, the NWS says.
