Baylor eliminated in equestrian quarterfinals

Tribune-Herald staff writer Chad Conine reports:

Third-seeded Georgia defeated Baylor in Hunter Seat competition, and top-seeded TCU closed out the Bears in Western today in the quarterfinals of the Varsity Equestrian National Championships at the Heart O’ Texas Fair Complex.

Baylor’s Nicole Brown, who enters Saturday’s individual competition as the top-seeded rider in Hunter Seat equitation over fences competition, posted the Bears’ only point in the quarterfinal matchup against Georgia through Thursday night’s fences round.

Georgia defeated Baylor, 3-1, in equitation on the flat on Friday morning to win the match, 6-2, and advance to the semifinals against Texas A&M. Heather Healy notched Baylor’s lone point on the flat against Georgia.

TCU swept Baylor in horsemanship on Thursday’s initial portion of the Western quarterfinals, 4-0.

The Bears came back with a 3-1 win in reining as Katrina Buss, Valtie Riddle and Madelyn Mooney each scored points for Baylor. However, the Bears couldn’t dig out of the deficit from the horsemanship event the night before and the Frogs advanced with a 5-3 overall victory.

Auburn eliminated defending Hunter Seat national champion South Carolina with a 5-3 win in the second round. In doing so, the fifth-seeded Tigers scored a mild upset over the No. 4 Gamecocks.
