Famous folks and their Waco connection
We’re working on an article here at the Tribune-Herald looking at famous people with ties to Waco. These generally should be folks who are known nationally, like Willie Nelson (yes, he’s from Abbott but he attended Baylor briefly), Jessica and Ashlee Simpson, LaDainian Tomlinson, former Gov. Ann Richards, Thomas Harris (Baylor grad who wrote “The Silence of the Lambs”), World War II hero Doris Miller, singer Jules Bledsoe and comedian/actor Steve Martin, who was born in Waco. We’ve already come up with a number of names, but want to make sure we’re not leaving anyone out. So what famous people with a tie to Waco can you think of?

No list of “famous” living Wacoan’s would be complete without including the internationally recognized Robert Wilson, a creative genius and arts visionary. Another name to add is Sandra Brown, who is a New York Times bestselling author. From the world of sports you should consider basketball great Vinnie “the microwave” Johnson, who lived in Waco while playing ball for MCC and Baylor before playing professionally for the Detroit Piston’s. Another superstar from the bench, federal judge Pricilla Owen, who got a good deal of ink nationally, when President Bush nominated her back in 2001.

Couple of Baylor artists went on to be involved in Hollywood films; David Negron (BU early 70’s I think) was an artist for the original Raiders of the Lost Ark film and Douglas Rogers (not the currently in Waco BU employee) but an art student from the early 80’s, went on to get a masters from Yale and was THE art director for the original Shrek movie. (Next time you watch Shrek, look for the obvious and not so obvious Baylor references! - “I believe”!) He is now with the Walt Disney Co.
