FBI agent booked at county jail
A Waco FBI agent was being held at the McLennan County Jail today on a cruelty to animals charge.
Lovett Les Ledger, 39, was booked at 7 a.m. today, and released in lieu of a $3,000 personal recognizance bond.
FBI spokesman Erik Vasys said the bureau is directing all comment to the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, and added that the FBI is cooperating fully with the investigation.
According to the sworn arrest warrant affidavit by Lt. Clay Perry of the sheriff’s office, Ledger admitted to investigators that he shot and killed a neighbor’s Chihuahua with a BB/pellet gun. The affidavit also says that Ledger earlier told investigators that he knew nothing about the shooting of the dog.

What a shame that a man working in the FBI thinks it is his right to shoot and kill a small defensless pet. I feel sorry for the parents that had to tell their young children about what happened to a beloved family member. How does one explain to a child, how someone that vowed to serve and protect, has killed your pet. He deserves the severest punishmet allowed. I wish the family of the chihuahua only the best.

I support this guy. The little rat dog was probably barking all the time and he needed to stop the noise to get some rest from his crime fighting. There are too many Chiwawas around anyway and we should ‘cull the herd’. The agent was being considerate to the neighbors by using a BB gun instead of his big FBI gun.

I’m with the first guy. He thinks because he works for the FBI he can do anything he wants to without consequence. I hate chihuahuas just as much as the next guy, but that is still someones pet. I’ll tell you right now, if he were to shoot my dog with something as small as a rubberband, he would have his FBI hands full with me! Kick his butt, take his badge, and lock him up with Mike Vick. I’m sure he’ll get nothing more than a fine though. The justice system doesn’t work when it’s their own on trial!

What is a PERSONAL RECOGNIZANCE BOND?
Personal Recognizance Bond: A dollar amount of the bond is established, however the defendant only has to sign the bond promising to appear on the future court dates. The defendant must have a mailing address and be approved through the courts or Bond Commissioners.
Looks like this jerk is already catching breaks from the court! The average citizen would have to pay up front before he/she were allowed to step one foot out of jail! What a bunch of BS

Let’s look at this a little differently. Let’s say his disrespectful, inconsiderate neighbor let her little rat-dog run the neighborhood, and every time Agent Ledger stepped into his garage, the chihuahua was eating his dog/cat food, leaving surprises in his yard, so he cut them up with his lawnmower and then stink up his garage when he parked it. So, like many people I know who may have popped a dog in the butt with a bb gun to run it off of his property, instead the bb passed between the thin skin of the dog’s ribs and hit it in the lung. Is this worth the agent losing his career, and the media sensationalizing these stories with titles like “FBI Sniper Shoots Family Pet”? I think it’s sad really, and these agents and officers in the community, working hard to clean up Waco and the surrounding communties, don’t deserve this garbage. I guess there’s too many tin-foil-hat-wearing anti-govt fanatics, quick to throw out terms like “FBI Sniper” and “Jack Booted Thugs” etc.. I’m really disappointed in a lot of you here..

There is no one who loves animals more than I do, BUT many owners are less admired. We should all hold judgement until we hear the “rest of the story”. We have a dog issue next door and have asked the owner for help, but they think they can allow the poor animal do whatever they like. Owners need to learn reponsible ownership. Lack thereof can drive a normally good citizen to abnormality….

There is no reason to shoot a dog or cat unless you are in fear of your or someone else’s life. I agree he took his job title for granted and lied about the incident to cover his butt. He had no right to shoot the animal. This type of dog does not live outside so the barking couldn’t bother him too much. What is next, a cover up on his job.

My comment is more about the extensive coverage by the media. Is it smart (or necessary) to place the agents photo all over the news. I assume this agent has a family and due to the nature of his job, might this place them all at an increased risk of danger.

It is unfortunate that the chihuahua died. They are such fragile animals that, it would be pretty easy to kill one with a bb gun, with a well placed or misplaced/unintended shot. What do those of you think a homeowner should do if a fellow homeowner has no control over their pets and lets them run wild? You can only “ask nicely” to the neighbors so many times before you get fed up. What recourse do homeowners have against nuisance neighborhood pets? Thank god I live in the country, where nuisance and feral animals can be taken care of without all the hassle and drama associated with this case. That said, I do draw some lines, between dogs, feral cats and wild animals. I would not shoot a neighbors dog unless it was dangerous or attacking my kids. I would shoot feral cats and wild animals that may carry rabies or other diseases that can be passed on to my kids or my animals. It’s scary to think that some of you here would be so quick to hang me out to dry for shooting a feral domestic cat, as that would also fall under the “Cruelty to Animals” statute as the letter of the law would dictate. Which is more cruel for an animal, a quick death where they probably didn’t even know what hit them, or getting trapped in a cage, then languishing in terror in a crowded kennel full of other terrified animals until they get the needle? In conclusion, I seriously doubt this agent planned to kill the chihuahua, and was probably just trying to sting it’s behind for a little reminder to stay off his property. Now, thanks to all the sensationalism, his career is probably ruined. To those of you who questioned: “What if my kid was on his property?” Shame on you! You know damn well that he wouldn’t shoot a child, but the Waco-Gangbanger-club that he and other officers do their best to keep under control would shoot your kid in a heartbeat if your kid got in their way.

don’t worry he and all the rest will be gone as soon as bush is out of town. Come on people. Use a little common sense. I know this guy personally. I doubt he went outside with the intent to kill the dog if he was using a bb gun. Unless you know the entire story I seriously think you should hold back your judgment and act the adults your supposed to be. Yes, it was someone’s pet but I have had plenty of neighbors who did not control their pets, even I have had to use a gun to scare a dog out of my yard and I wasn’t using a bb gun. The media as usual is blowing this out of proportion and what risk to him or his family.

well i guess we can’t all get newspaper and television coverage and not all people guilty of cruelty to animals will be arrested. 3 years ago my daughters german shepherd was killed in the lorena area while we went camping overnight, the next morning we came home to neighbors telling us the temple fireman that lived across the street shot our dog. after talking to him he admitted that he shot our dog as the dog was running from his yard. so yes this fine upstanding citizen, a fireman! shot a defenseless dog while it was running away from him, then proceeded to take his body and dump him in the pasture further up the road!! we called the sheriffs dept and filed a complaint, they interviewed neighbors and in the end nothing was done to this horrible person. yes our dog was guilty of jumping the fence and wondering around, but he was not a vicious dog and the fact that this coward admitted the dog was running from him proves that! i thinks this speaaks volumes about his character, makes you wonder what kind of fireman he really is. i’m glad i don’t live in temple.

I do not support anyone that kills an animal just because it barks whether it is law enforcement or citizen. If the dog was sick or a threat to his children he might have a leg to stand on but if not we have to call it like it is; stupid bad decision by a FBI Agent. If you want to support him, go ahead. This is much more than just a family pet being shot to death (she did not die on contact by the way.) This wasn’t the first dog killed in the neighborhood by this man. How safe is it that he can just pick up a gun in the middle of the afternoon (people out in their yards) and kill the chihuahua wearing a pink collar with tags while small children watched? Bottom line: you don’t kill family pets. There is a reason it is a felony. How do you tell the small children who owned the dog that she is dead. I feel sorry for the family…how horrible that must have been. Sorry about the 12 month process the guy had to go through, does that make him above the law?

This is a sad situation, I feel for the family who is going through the loss of their pet as well as the children being afraid of a bad guy in the area. Just because he is a law official gives him no right to shoot neighbors pets. He is a grown man that knows better and just because he is in the FBI he should not be given any extra privileges. A three pound Chihuahua would not cause so much ruckus that would involve a man shooting it with anything. He also denied shooting the little dog, what a COWARD you really want a man like that protecting you. I would like to believe law officials would be honest and admit when they have done something wrong. This guy straight up lied, he deserves what he gets. Heck i think I would be fearful of the kids in the area that he lives in. If he feels he can kill a child’s pet who’s to say he wouldn’t snap and harm his neighbors. Again, my thought is he doesn’t deserve to protect us from criminals because he is a criminal himself.

I cannot believe that anyone would defend this man. How much noise/mess can one little Chihuahua make? And apparently he has killed dogs in that neighborhood before? And to have shot the dog in front of children? I would not want this idiot living anywhere near me, let alone carrying a badge. And some of you seem to be missing the point, the man is in law enforcement, but broke the law and then LIED to the investigators about it. I would imagine the only reason he finally confessed is because they had witnesses to identify him. Not only is he NOT above the law, as an FBI agent, he should be held to a higher standard. He should be fired from the FBI, and should never work in law enforcement again. And if the Cub Scouts of America have any brains, they will not have him as a scout leader anymore either. I would say that he should have to be the one to explain to the owners children why their dog is gone, but I am sure the owners don’t want him anywhere near their kids. Oh, and for anyone who says this shouldn’t be news, wake up, anytime someone in law enforcement breaks the law and lies about it, it is news. And to Rat: I am off work today, what’s your excuse?

I don’t know any of the facts - just like all of you. I do know that Chihuaha’s are notorious for being aggresive and for biting. Don’t believe it - look at any of the dog breeders websites under temperament. Or from Wikipedia “Chihuahuas are not well-suited as small children’s pets because of their size, temperament, and tendency to bite when frightened”. Suppose this guy has a small child and the dog is constantly harrasing the child. What does this guy do if it’s owners don’t keep it contained? If he lives where the news report says, there is no animal control available. If this dog or any dog was tormenting my child and the owner would take responsibility, I would probably remedy the situation in the same manner. Dead dogs can’t bite my kids. Here’s an idea, how about we let the court decide what happened before we hang this guy. It is disgusting to me that so many people can be so upset and they don’t know any of the facts.

Thats good Jeanna that you know this guy personally, that just means your automatically going to be on his side and everyone is going to disregard everything you say. He’s and FBI agent, so he should be worrying about the stopping criminals, not baby chihuahuas who might run in his yard for one second. If your complaining about crimes in Waco you should be irritated that this guy is wasting his time dealing with chihuahuas instead of the criminals…AND Who even cares if the dog pooped in his yard (which no one knows is even true) it was fertilizing his yard making his grass greener. Nothing to cry over. In reading many of the posts, I am alarmed with the attitude that Agent Ledger should not pay for the unjust killing of the 3 pound Chihuahua. All law enforcement officers should be able to manage their temper. It is obvious he simply snapped…..Is this the kind of agent we want protecting us? Has he snapped before? Will he snap again? The FBI profiles people like him…Many serial killers started the same way!!
As I understand the case, Ledger is alleging he was protecting his family from a very violent and ferocious Chihuahua. As we all know this breed has killed and maimed many people…Law Enforcement would use Chihuahua’s if it were not for their arch enemy… the wind…Gusts over 5 mph are know to disable this ferocious killer. All fun aside..This man has killed multiple dogs in his neighborhood and this will come out at his trial. Animal cruelty is a very political issue and I doubt the DA’s office will be cutting any kind of deal with such a public following this case will receive. He will do the time for the crime.

ANIMAL ABUSE AND ITS RELATION TO VIOLENCE, CHILD ABUSE AND MURDER Below are articles taken from various internet sites. They contain all the reasoning you will ever need to expose and do something about animal abuse. Read these articles by various doctors, universities, and the FBI. “Murderers … very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids” Violent acts toward animals have long been recognized as indicators of a dangerous psychopathy that does not confine itself to animals. “Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives,” wrote humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer. “Murderers … very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids,” according to Robert K. Ressler, who developed profiles of serial killers for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Studies have now convinced sociologists, lawmakers, and the courts that acts of cruelty toward animals deserve our attention. They can be the first sign of a violent pathology that includes human victims.
Animal abuse is not just the result of a minor personality flaw in the abuser but rather a symptom of a deep mental disturbance. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty toward animals don’t stop there; many of them move on to their fellow humans.
The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appear in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers, and the standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals as a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders.
A study conducted by Northeastern University and the Massachusetts SPCA found that people who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against humans. The majority of inmates scheduled to be executed for murder at California’s San Quentin penitentiary “practiced” their crimes on animals, according to the warden. • As a child, serial killer and rapist Ted Bundy—ultimately convicted of two killings but suspected of murdering more than 40 women—witnessed his father’s violence toward animals, and he himself subsequently tortured animals.
• Earl Kenneth Shriner, who raped and stabbed a 7-year-old boy, was known in his neighborhood for hanging cats and torturing dogs. • David Berkowitz (a.k.a. “Son of Sam”), who pleaded guilty to 13 murder and attempted murder charges, shot a neighbor’s Labrador retriever. • Brenda Spencer, who opened fire at a California school, killing two children and injuring nine others, had repeatedly abused cats and dogs, often setting their tails on fire. • Serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer impaled the heads of dogs and cats on sticks.

Mr. Ledger, I do not know you. I suspect you have devoted your LIFE to protecting others. Then, for whatever reason, you react to pelt a little, neighborhood dog with a bb on the butt. You are trained and you KNOW a bb gun hasn’t the force to harm a mammal, especially at 75 - 100 feet. BB guns are low-powered and inexact, you probably won’t even hit the animal, just move it along. POP! What? You cannot believe your eyes as the dog falls. You step inside to protect your child, even your self. You question with logic. You feel denial. Like a school kid throwing a spit wad which happens to hit someone’s eye. It is an accident. Intentional action with accidental results. Your best possible reaction would have been to pick up the animal, take it to its owner and apologize. But I write with hindsight; in the moment I probably would have just hoped it all went away. Who would have thunk it? I am truly sorry for your predicament. I would love to hear more about you and your side of this story but our legal system will not allow that. You are entwined by a bark and a toy gun. Please know that others have been in your shoes. Not all of us are so quick to condemn. I hold onto the possibility, no the probability that you are a good man. Don’t let a crazed society convince you otherwise. Godspeed.

Wacoan: This is animal abuse…He is being investigated for multiple dog killings in the same neighborhood. If these allegations are true then he is a serial “dog” killer. His own agency (FBI) has profiled many “human” abusers and have credibly linked this type of behavior to a dangerous psychopathy that does not confine itself to animals.
You stated “you react to pelt a little neighborhood dog with a bb on the butt. You are trained and you KNOW a bb gun hasn’t the force to harm a mammal, especially at 75 - 100 feet”. BB guns are low-powered and inexact, you probably won’t even hit the animal, just move it along. POP! What? You cannot believe your eyes as the dog falls. You step inside to protect your child, even your self. You question with logic. You feel denial. Like a school kid throwing a spit wad which happens to hit someone’s eye”.
How do you know where a trained FBI sniper was aiming? How do you know he was feeling denial “like a school kid”? Were you there? Have you killed many dogs? FYI…The round entered the neck not the butt. You obviously know nothing about the power of a BB gun: (from a dealer’s website) Pellet Guns for Pest Killing & Small Game Hunting A pellet gun has many uses, from fun to serious. When it comes to the more serious uses, pellet guns are favored by homeowners, gardeners, and farmers to eliminate pesky varmint trouble. They project killing force at short to medium ranges. It makes this type of air gun a good choice for eradicating troublesome critters in and around the yard or farm, as well as hunting small game. Here are some popular pellet guns and BB Guns for hunting small game or eliminating pests from your property. While you can get the job done with a .177 caliber rifle if it is capable of producing velocities in excess of 900 ft/sec, we highly recommend one of the .22 caliber air guns. You will usually lose some muzzle velocity when you step up from .177 to .22 caliber rifles, but the .22 pellets are heftier and provide a significantly bigger wallop, ensuring a cleaner kill.

I am sure that you never thought twice about killing the dog. Reading all of the post on this there are some crazy tree hugging people out there. Well if you need anything at all let me know. I know that you do good things for our country. Less was my son’s den leader in Cub Scouts and did a wonderful job. Less again if you need anything let me know.
