Thongs up, or thongs down?
Part of my job here at the Trib involves placing and editing the Dear Abby columns. Sometimes, they’re rather entertaining.
There were two Dear Abby columns that ran yesterday and the day before in our paper about an interesting, if somewhat off-color, topic: whether or not women should wear thong underwear. Is it sinful? Provocative? Just too darn uncomfortable?
I have started asking everyone (with some tasteful exceptions) what they think thong underwear says about a woman. What do granny panties say? Bikini underwear? G-strings?
I’d like to conduct my own informal poll: How many of you guys out there think that the type of underwear a woman wears defines her in some way? Is it kind of like the whole tramp stamp thing? If a woman has one, she must be easy?
Or as one woman responded in Wednesday’s DEAR ABBY, “It is possible for a girl who wears ‘granny panties’ to still sleep around.”
I certainly don’t have a preconceived idea about a guy over whether or not he wears boxers or briefs. But, hey, I’m a girl, so the inner-workings of male minds elude me - Thank God!
My favorite response was in Thursday’s column. Robert in Mountain Lakes, N.J. said, “Thongs up or down? Up, they’re uncomfortable — I twist my neck and strain my eyes — but I have to say I really love them down.” — Ah, finally, an honest man.

I read that column yesterday too and thought it was funny! Throughout the ages and in many cultures women have gone to painful extremes to enhance our beauty (whale-bone corsets, foot binding, neck rings, etc.) so the thong doesn’t seem like too big a deal to me. I personally don’t think a women should be judged by the type of underwear she chooses. My only problem with them is that, with today’s low-rise jeans, you run the risk of them being visible at the top. Call me old-fashioned but they’re called UNDERwear for a reason. A big pet peeve of mine is going to a sporting event or concert, etc. and looking down at a sea of butt-cracks!

Panties in general are made to do two things. One keep irritants out, and two keep excretions in or off outer wear. They are made in various sizes, but certainly not for every body type.
Since they are under garments, they touch the body first and should defiantly be comfortable to the person.
With that in mind I don’t think you can cast a accurate judgment of the persons behavior. I do think men and women alike try to based on what they find appealing. This does not start with the panties though.
Panty lines in general are unattractive to sex appeal in my opinion, but this doesn’t mean they need to have on a thong. It all depends on the persons body build, and the material of the outer wear.
I think thongs hanging out of the back of the outfit does send a certain signal to others. Unfortunately the signal is not clear. You don’t know if they are easy, just confident, or out for attention. The thing you do know is that they are aware of it.
Granny panties have there place, but typically are boring in design and color patterns. This sometimes follows suit in the women who wear them. Victoria Secret does carry a line of in between that are very appealing in their cut. They seem to be the bridge between the two styles. Worn by the proper body style are very appealing.
If I had to vote I would say yes, it does define a woman in some manner. However, the word “some” is very broad.

I gotta be honest, I like those sexy draws. I could not imagine wearing a thong though…ouch! My posterior is way too sensitive for that kind of irratation. The panties don’t make a woman easy or anything else.
As a guy, I always looked at the way a woman carried herself to determine if I was in for a quick good time or not. I will say that in most cases that I have found, the woman had a certain way of dressing that seemed to indicate what she was into.
There is no determination or exact science to that because I have dated women that looked like Polly Pure Heart in the day and Down and Dirty Donna at night.
I like panty lines too on the right figure but if they look like they are in the process of trying to cut the girl in half then it is more than I can stand.

A girl once told me that she always wore nice and slinky underwear. I said, “Really?”, and she answered that wearing them made her feel prettier. That was in 1991 on a little island (I mean little-bitty) of Diego Garcia, B.I.O.T.. <><

I have worn thongs since high school. Yea the first week was uncomfortable but once u get used to it- u dont even notice. I think the main reason thongs were invented were to prevent panty lines from showing through panst/dresses/skirts. I think a girl should wear whatever she feels comfortable and/or pretty in. Im not a “tramp” for wearing thongs. I am married with a kid, I dont consider that a tramp. Guys will always have a certain mindset about women..thats why they are guys ;-)
