Hitchcock (and others) at the Hippodrome
Along with swimming holes, mint juleps and fresh salsa, watching old movies in old movie palaces is one of the primal joys of summer. In my college days I used to catch the likes of Lawrence of Arabia and Casablanca at the Paramount Theater in Austin. Now the Waco Hippodrome is stepping up to the plate with an ice-cold lineup for the summer.
“E.T.”, that icon of the early 1980s, plays tonight at 7:30 p.m; tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children. Other family movies will follow — “Kung Fu Panda” on June 19 and the “Muppet Movie” on June 26. Nothing wrong with family movies — I was the target audience for “E.T.” and the “Muppet Movie” when they came out. But I’m more excited about the Hippodrome’s creepy Hitchcock lineup.
“Rear Window,” showing at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, kicks off the monthly series from the master of suspense, part of the Third Thursday festivities organized by the Downtown Merchants Association. “To Catch a Thief” is coming in July, followed by my favorite, “Vertigo,” in August.
You can get free tickets for the Hitchcock movies by dining or shopping downtown and saving your receipt. See you there.

Is third Thursday on? I had forgotten all about it. Is that a seasonal thing? What’s the schedule? I wish I didn’t currently work nights, bummer…

This Thursday June 18, the Waco Downtown Merchant’s Association will kick off it’s new Third Thursday Summer Movie Series encouraging people to come downtown and enjoy an evening on the town with a friend or loved one and experience classic Hitchcock films as they were originally meant to be enjoyed…on the big screen.
Anyone who presents a receipt at the hippodrome box office marked June 18th from any downtown restaurant or retail establishment will receive 2 free tickets to the movie. We currently have planned a Hitchcock series for the third Thursdays in June, July and August.
Here’s the lineup: June: Rear Window (Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly) July: To Catch a Thief (Carey Grant, Grace Kelly) August: Vertigo (Jimmy Stewart, Kim Novak)

I would imagine most of the public events that have been happening downtown will soon start to grind to a halt.
The General Contractor who has been building the Austin Ave Flats and the related projects has filed a $1.9 million lien against Michael Wray and Waco Town Square Partners. Apparently, contractors like Ford Taylor actually like to get paid for the jobs they do, and Wray and Company are out of money.
Shelton Plumbing has jumped on the band wagon and filed a $125,000 lien against Wray and Company, too, but that won’t be the last six-figure lien to be filed against Wray and friends. Stay tuned…
Ladies and gentlemen, the wheels are definitely wobbling, and soon will fall off. Why the Waco Trib hasn’t been all over this story, I’ll never know. Maybe they’re saving it up for a big Sunday cover story?!?!
Things are getting very interesting downtown for those who care to pay attention to details.

Downtown Waco? Well……there’s a sucker born every minute. What’s so sad is that the “con victims” were warned (and warned often) by the previous victims in Austin Texas. Our very own Waco City Manager, Waco City Council and the Greater Waco Chamber of Suckers “loudly and proudly” carried the Banner for the out-of-town, smooth-talking Huckster. They wouldn’t listen; they just wouldn’t listen. It’s called GREED.

Wondering if this event is actually going to happen since its not even being promoted on the Hippodromes web site? And if it is still on for tonight…its not being promoted well enough. So if you want this to fail… your doing a good job of it.

Third Thursday is absolutely going to happen. You must have missed it on the Hippodrome website, it’s on the front page and on the “on screen” page. Join us, it’s going to be a good time.

I hope the movie nights are a success.
This is off topic, but since it was brought up— New downtown developers. You are being watched like a hawk by the general public. One more mess-up, and you can throw in the towel. It may be no big deal to you, but it is to Wacoans as they are tired of being beaten up nationwide by stuff like this.
To the Waco City Government. You have put all your stock in Baylor while the rest of Waco is laying in ruin. You need to get your priorities straight.

Hey JB? I was jogging down the Riverwalk (beside our polluted Brazos River) and I actually saw a young man (and some kids) cleaning up a portion of the river. They weren’t City Employees and he was dragging “foul stuff” off in a four-wheeler. It was a bloody-hot day and they cleaned out a small cove between Indian Springs and IH35. Do you know anything about this act of kindness? Or who it was? “Hope springs eternal in the human breast”. It was a small spark of goodness in an attempt to clean up our foul river.

I imagine the Trib didn’t publish anything about the Flats because until now it was hearsay. But supposedly Wray has left a string of unpaid bills across town. Sounds like his ego got in the way of good management-big fish in a small pond, at least for a while until it caught up with him. I imagine prospective tenants got fed up with inaccurate and ever-changing construction timelines.
Perhaps the Wallace group will force Wray out and bring in credible management. Waco definitely needs this project to succeed.

Sure let’s not ask questions about the contractor or how far he was behind or how the subs were months behind and what contractual rights the owner has. Those that question need to question the contractor and subs…it was obvious that they couldn’t complete and were far behind. I am sure that they owe bigtime penalties and u bet the owner is withholding final payment until the penalties are worked out. The contractor and subs are no victim here.

Good point, Dave. Or, maybe it was running behind due to unplanned changes or a lack of timely payment in the first place?
Heritage Quarters looks almost complete and it started construction much later.

Doesn’t look like we will hear any more about this. Maybe we need a real newspaper to do some investigation!
