Introducing the FR Podcast

Since most people are starting their holiday weekends, I’m going to scrap the usual format today and instead simply present the first-ever First Reading podcast.

My guest is Eileen Smith, the editor of TexasMonthly.com and the creator of the brilliant In The Pink blog. The blog changed how everyone in the Capitol press corps operates when it came on the scene in 2005, and we talk about how she launched it, how she made it stand out and what it’s been like to join the mainstream media. We also discuss tea parties, Rick Perry’s active Twitter life and the Dewhurst wedding.

I’m going to try to do these once or twice a week. Usually it won’t replace a regular First Reading posting like it has today, but will just be part of whatever I have to write that day.

It lasts about 35 minutes. You can listen below, but I would suggest downloading it onto an MP3 player or CD and listening while you’re doing something else. To download, if you have a PC, right-click on the icon above and click on “save link as.” If you have a Mac, hold down “control” and click on the mouse and then click on “save link as.” It should then be saved on your computer.

Hope you enjoy. I’m a writer and not a broadcaster, so please give me a little time to get better at this. It feels a little like that time on Seinfeld when Kramer found an old Merv Griffin set and awkwardly pretended like he was hosting a television show. Fortunately I had Eileen to smooth out the edges.

Have a good holiday. Back Monday.

Love the podcast—you’re hilarious—but please fix the audio quality! I can hear the mic popping all over the place and there’s that weird wind sound.

Ok, just read the bottom part of your article—“please give me time to get better at this.” So if I could I’d delete that first comment and just say congrats. It’s fun!

Good breaking of the champaing bottle moment for the maiden voyage of FR podcasting. The pink hint was clever. Pink blog is irreverently funny.

because people are more oriented toward audio and video these days, as long as it’s on the world wide dweeb, you ought to consider doing the podcast only and letting the writing thing go. yep. it’s that’ good.

Commenting is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. M-F
