The cost of incarcerating the elderly
By Walter M. Reaves Jr.
The managed health care committee for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice is scheduled to meet next week in Dallas. Thanks to Grits for Breakfast, I was able to learn a few details of what his their own agenda; he spent the time to review their 168 page agenda.
It's not surprising that TDCJ spends a lot of money of health care. They have lost more than 24.2 million dollars during the first 3 quarters of the current fiscal quarter, and continue to run in red at the rate of 5-7 million dollars a month. It's not surprising that the cost of taking care of older inmates is greater - just as in the general population. What was surprising was that while the prison population has decreased slightly, the number of offenders over 55 (I guess they consider that older - personally I would disagree) has increased - 5.9% to be specific.
