Baylor has been selected as one of 16 first-round host sites for the 2010-11 NCAA women’s basketball tournament, the NCAA announced Thursday.
Besides Waco, the other 15 cities that will host first-round games include Albuquerque, N.M.; Auburn, Ala.; Charlottesville, Va.; Cincinnati; Columbus, Ohio; College Park, Md.; Durham, N.C.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Salt Lake City; Spokane, Wash.; Shreveport, La.; Stanford, Calif.; Storrs, Conn.; University Park, Pa.; and Wichita, Kan.
“We consider it a great privilege to host the NCAA opening round games,” BU athletic director Ian McCaw said. “Baylor is blessed with the best women’s basketball fans in the country, and Lady Bear Nation will fill the Ferrell Center.”
This marks the second time Baylor has hosted the NCAA’s first round. In 2002, the Lady Bears defeated Bucknell before falling to Drake in the second round at the Ferrell Center, drawing a total of 19,918 fans for the two games.
Tickets for the event will go on sale next summer.
In addition, the NCAA announced that the Big 12 would host one of the four regionals at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
