On homecoming Saturday, there was no shortage of yellow in the stands at Floyd Casey Stadium.
To Baylor coach Art Briles’ disgruntlement, there was no shortage of it on the turf, either.
Baylor was penalized eight times for 85 yards in its 31-28 loss to the 14th-ranked Missouri Tigers.
Baylor vs. Missouri

- » 4th-down plays bring Baylor back against Missouri
- Updated team stats
- Full game summary
That included a costly chop-block penalty against BU offensive lineman Jason Smith and a late hit against linebacker Joe Pawelek that aided Missouri’s momentum-building, 14-point opening quarter.
Briles was careful not to be overly critical of the officiating after the game, but he made it clear he wasn’t exactly pleased.
“Out of unbelievable respect and admiration for (athletic director) Ian McCaw, I’m not going to say things I feel like I have the right to say about the way the game was officiated,” Briles said. “That’s the only thing holding me back. I feel like I should do the job of protecting our football team, protecting Baylor University.
“I think our players were playing behind the eight-ball in the first quarter, and I think it affected the outcome of the football game. I think the ballgame should have been tied up at halftime. That’s becoming a recurring factor. But like I said, out of respect for Ian, that’s all I’m going to say about that.”
Another mark for Griffin
It had to end sometime, but Robert Griffin managed to stay interception-free long enough to set one more record.
Already the owner of the best unblemished start for a collegiate freshman, Griffin set an NCAA record in the third quarter for the most pass attempts without a pick to start a career, regardless of classification. USC’s Brad Otton held the previous record of 202 pass attempts over the 1994 and ’95 seasons.
Griffin’s streak came to a close when Missouri linebacker Brock Christopher picked off his final toss of the day.
Pawelek hits 100
Baylor junior linebacker Joe Pawelek, the Big 12’s leading tackler, corralled another team-high 13 tackles against the Tigers, giving him 105 on the season.
Pawelek is the first Baylor linebacker to top the century mark in tackles since Dean Jackson in 1996.
Not surprisingly, Baylor’s all-time single-season leader in tackles in none other than Mike Singletary, who racked up a mind-blowing 232 tackles in 1978.
Singletary, who went on to a Hall of Fame career with the Chicago Bears, also owns the No. 2 and 3 single-season tackle marks in school history, with 188 and 145, respectively.
BU hoops team honored
Twenty years later, the 1987-88 Baylor men’s basketball team still knows how to get a rise out of a crowd.
That ’88 BU hoops team, the last to reach the NCAA tournament prior to last year’s Cinderella run by Scott Drew’s team, was honored at halftime of Saturday’s homecoming game.
Among the stars of that team in attendance were center Darryl Middleton and guard Micheal Williams, who went on to set an NBA record for consecutive made free throws with 97.

Oh yeah, Bear1 (what a misnomer!). Baylor could have had Singletary "drop trou" for them instead of the 49ers. Gee, wouldn't that have been great. He won't even be the 49ers coach next season and you Baylor grads should be happy he isn't there. Great pick, so-called Bear1! Not!

Stephen, your post had me cracking up. It also reminded me of some friends who came into town and saw this ad where Baylor would lower the ticket price to $2.00 if you brought your church program, or empty water bottle or candy wrapper. Desperate?
I work for a very large corporation that supports BU and in return is given tickets to sporting events. As you may have guessed, we can't even give the tickets away.
I enjoy this blog for the overly optimistic BU fan comments and the Baptist attacking and name calling of those they feel do not "believe". I can feel the Baylor warmth and love alive in Waco.
PS Jon was my spelling and grammar correct?

You think Baylor has a chance to beat Texas?!!?? Wow, I've never laughed so hard in my life! How stupid can one be? Are you kidding? Is your post a joke? It must be, because no one in their right mind would post such an ignorant comment. I have a better chance at winning the lottery than Baylor has at even competing with UT. I thought Baylor was better at educating their students--I guess they don't teach common freakin' sense! Typical Baylor--you'll show up with 2000 students/fans, only to be outdone by 17,000 UT fans. Maybe Shipley's will offer the "free ticket for a doughnut special" once again--then you can have 2500 students/fans. What a pathetic "athletic" program!

I feel the Baylor football team and coaches are doing a great job this year. It's fun to watch a team with the desire and passion to win. There is no doubt this team is turning into something special. I'll be watching this weekend, and I fully expect Baylor to beat Texas. Is there anyone who agrees with me?

You boneheads actually see improvement in this program? At what level? I guess when your program is the laughing stock of college football that simply showing up to the stadium on time warrants merit. Your punter is an absolute disgrace--yet he's in contention for an award? Incredible. Your fan base is disgraceful--you couldn't sell out Floyd Casey stadium if Garth Brooks was opening for the cubs. Seriously, is there any school spirit in this town (other than the 5 bloggers here)? I've been in Waco for 4 years and have yet to come across anyone who gives a &$# about the Baylor football program. But your other sports are great, right? When was the last time anyone cared about women's basketball? Maybe I'll catch your team's chess match on espn9 next week! Well, at least you have a new facility to practice in---you certainly need it. Maybe you could join the ranks of Pop Warner and perhaps win more than 3 games per season! I'll gladly suggest that to Ian!

Let me try to help you baylor fellas understand something.
Baylor LOST the football game. 15,000 Empty seats on Homecoming.
13th year in the Big 12 Bayulor 3-9 again."
If you are going to criticize a team, at least learn how to spell. Whatever you choose to say loses merit when it shows a 6th grade education.

Baylor is obviously improved offensively and played inspired defensive football on saturday. With talent like Griffin, if Briles can improve the overall talent level and depth with Texas boys, the south will just continue to get tougher in the Big12. I am not looking forward to you guys coming to our place next year after we graduate 13 starters.
