It hasn’t taken Baylor coach Art Briles long to realize how difficult it is to win in the Big 12.
That’s why he takes every lost opportunity so hard.
After throwing Nebraska on the ropes Saturday, the Bears couldn’t finish it off and came home from Lincoln with a 32-20 loss.

“We certainly feel we’re a capable football team that can win games of that nature,” Briles said Sunday. “That’s what eats at you. That was a good opportunity to get a Big 12 win against a quality opponent, and we’ve got to take full advantage of it.”
Leading 20-17 in the third quarter, the Bears had a chance to go up by 10 when they drove to Nebraska’s 1. But Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin was stuffed for a one-yard loss on third down, and Ben Parks missed a 19-yard field goal.
Nebraska responded by driving 80 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The Bears never regained the lead as they fell to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12.
“When we didn’t score in the third quarter, we lost the momentum,” Briles said. “That’s an area where we need to grow as a team. We’ve got to learn how to recreate momentum after we lose it. We never got to that point Saturday.”
The Bears didn’t go into the game at full strength at cornerback after Dwain Crawford twisted his ankle in a 34-6 loss to Oklahoma State on Oct. 18. True freshman Trentson Hill and sophomore Krys Buerck started at cornerback, while Antareis Bryan came off the bench after suffering a strained quadricep muscle against Oklahoma State. With Crawford out, safety Tim Atchison moved from safety to cornerback.
With Ganz hitting 32 of 46 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns, the Cornhuskers controlled the ball for more than 38 minutes. Unable to get Nebraska off the field, the Bears finished with just 116 yards total offense in the second half after collecting 234 yards in the first half.
“That (ball control) has been Nebraska’s M.O., but they wouldn’t have had the ball that much if we had ponied up a couple of times,” Briles said. “If we had scored in the third quarter, ball control would have boded in our favor.”
While Briles expects Crawford to return for Saturday’s homecoming game against Missouri, he believes offensive lineman Jordan Hearvey could be out with a season-ending knee injury. Hearvey limped out of the Nebraska game early in the second quarter, and later returned to the sidelines on crutches. Briles said Hearvey will undergo an MRI on his left knee today to determine the seriousness of the injury.
After two weeks on the road, the Bears will face a Missouri team coming off a 58-0 blowout of Colorado Saturday in Columbia. Chase Daniel continued his brilliant senior year by hitting 31 of 37 passes for 302 yards while matching his own school record with five touchdowns.
Briles knows Daniel since he tried to recruit him out of Southlake Carroll High School four years ago while he was coaching at the University of Houston.
“I might have been the first guy to offer him a scholarship,” Briles said. “I thought of him as a linebacker playing quarterback. Chase is a competitor with toughness and leadership qualities.”
While Briles was pleased with the way his team competed against the Cornhuskers, he obviously wasn’t happy going home with a close loss.
“We can’t be satisfied with just being in it,” Briles said. “We’ve got to be a force. We can’t watch others flourish while we flounder. If they get better, we’ve got to get better.”

To Jon: I'm not usually one to respond to others. But I feel I have to school you up a little bit. If you have the ability to watch that game again do so. Nebraska's O & D lines pretty much dominated. You listed all these missed opportunities and fail to give Nebraska any credit. Those were things either Nebraska did good or Baylor did bad. I will list two things that were a 14 point swing for the Bears. Punt clearly hit Bryan and not the NU guy. NU roughing the kicker. One is the refs, other is NU player. All you listed could just be said to be good plays by NU. I'm sure the Huskers could come up with their own list of blown assisnments and show you how they could have rolled up at least 35 more points.

I'm a Baylor grad and a die hard fan, so I'll try not to be too negative. So, to put it simply and without emotion, the reasons we lost this game are:
1) Special teams play. Yeah I know, it's an age old cliche, but it's so true in this case. I counted 3 straight times that Nebraska pinned us inside our own 10. That kills. Not to mention that we muff the kick-off return 80% of the time which then turns into a kneel down, or a delayed run back. Lastly, the missed PAT, FG, and poor punt didn't help either.
Check out Briles' history and you'll find his Special teams play has always been poor. Go read prior UH message boards and you'll find that that was a common complaint by the Cougar fans. He won't hire a dedicated Special teams coach so he can save the money. Hmmm, wonder if OU and Texas have a Special teams coach. You bet they do.
2) Briles' creativity was absent in crucial 3rd down situations. Almost all of our big plays come when we use play fakes and/or misdirection. Everytime we get in 3rd and short we think we can out-muscle or out-run the opponent. We're Baylor, we can't out-play anyone physically. That's why we have to win with smarts and scheme. When we do well, Briles' play calling is creative and unexpected. When we do poor, it's because Briles tries to force it "by the book". He needs to keep the defense guessing and we stand a chance, otherwise we've got no shot. Look at film and you'll see that we get shut down on 3rd down when Briles uses a play straight from the Stephenville High playbook.
He himself said he needed to call better plays when he referred to not scoring from the Neb. 1 yd. line. I only hope he continues to learn from his own mistakes with respect to Special teams coaching (or lack thereof) and playcalling.

you might be right i guess you'll find out against A&M. I think you'll lose that game. I think Baylor would lose to colorado & to KSU too but I could be and am often wrong. I think in all 3 games it would be close - which is more than you could say in years past.

I believe:
I believe Spurlover is always right.
I believe the bears will beat MSU, UT and The Aggies.
I believe McCaw was right to hire Briles over Singletary.
I believe Teaff should be a hero for going 83-74-4 in the Southwest Conference.
I believe I will win the Texas Lotto.
I believe most of Waco really likes Baylor and Baylor football.
I believe eating a worm helps motivates just as well as Mohawks.
I believe in the tooth fairy.

I GIVE THE TEAM A COMPLIMENT. THEY ARE STARTING TO BE INTERESTING TO WATCH WHILE LIVING IN CINCINNATI,OHIO. I AM A TEXAN AND I AM FROM MARLIN DOWN THE STREET. I HAVE JUST A FEW QUESTIONS,EXAMPLE WHY IS THE QB WHOSE RATHER SMALL TRYING TO RUN UP THE MIDDLE OF THE DEFENSE? WHY NOT TRY THE HURRY UP OFFENSE WHEN THE NEED ARISES? HAVEN'T YOU HEARD OF THE WILD CAT OFFENSE,IT'S USED BY ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS AND IT'S USED BY THE NFL TEAM MIAMI DOLPHINS,MEANING USE YOUR RB'S TO RUN THE BALL INSIDE OR EVEN THROW IT JUST TO CONFUSE THE DEFENSE. I KNOW YOU HAVE A QB PLAYING RB ON BAYLOR'S FOOTBALL TEAM. I SEE NO PLAYER IN MOTION AND THE PLAYS LOOK ALIKE EVERY TIME YOU RUN THE OFFENSE. ON DEFENSE USE THE SAFETY AS THE EXTRA LINEBACKER BY THE DEFENSIVE END READY TO RUSH THE QB OR STOP THE RUN. I HOPE THE COACHES COME ACROSS THIS COMMENT. FROM ALWAYS A FAN.

jo gale "Griffin is a great player and will be around for several years to come but other than him Baylor is still the second worse team in the Big 12"
I'd disagree. We are 8-9 in my opinion. Nothing to write home about, but certainly not the worst or next in line.
We are better than CO, Iowa State, A&M and arguably Kansas State.
ryan "Nebraska should have one this game by a lot more points. They were clearly the better team by far. '
Did you actually watch this game? Baylor was a Sack+Horrible punt + easy field goal position and a lost 1st and goal opportunity TD from being up by 17 against Nebraska. Oh, lets toss in the missed FG and the blocked PAT too.
I'd say they gave it away, really. Good teams don't do that and we certainly weren't a good team this last weekend.

My son played D End for Baylor 2000 - 2004,I went to 80 % of ALL games. I still see the SAME Offense, that is, run up the middle, pass in the flat. Why, Why, Why, don't they take a page or two from Texas Tech's game plan. when you pass , pass 8-10 yards, then 10 - 15 yards. Baylor has changed coaches 3 times in 6 years. Texas Tech has changed quarterbacks 4 times in 10 years and what do they get, 35 plus T D's every year, No matter who is at quarter back. I thought this year Coach was going to put this into Baylor since he was at Tech for awhile. I Love the Baylor program, all sports, I just hope the football team can win more.
