Playing under FIBA rules, the Baylor women’s basketball team had a wider lane with which to operate.
They took advantage of the extra space.
Baylor dominated in the paint in bulling past the University of British Columbia, 101-44, in the second of two offseason exhibition games Sunday at UBC’s War Memorial Gym. Baylor also defeated Simon Fraser, 86-67, on Saturday, giving the Lady Bears a sweep of two of Canada’s top programs.
Baylor scored a whopping 64 points in the paint and also outrebounded the Thunderbirds, 36-29. A pair of freshmen, Ashley Field and Terran Condrey, scored 17 points apiece to pace a balanced scoring attack.
Three other players — junior posts Danielle Wilson and Morghan Medlock and senior post Rachel Allison — added 11 points each.
Baylor coach Kim Mulkey expressed satisfaction over the play of her newcomers. Mulkey used new players for the entire third quarter of the game, and Baylor outscored the Thunderbirds in that quarter, 24-15. (Under FIBA rules, games are divided into four 10-minute quarters rather than two 20-minute halves).
“I thought we settled down quite a bit tonight,” Mulkey said. “We seemed to have gotten our nerves out quite a bit against Simon Fraser yesterday. This trip was a success on several fronts: we got to experience another country, see some gorgeous scenery and were able to get an idea of what our newcomers can do.”
With the offseason excursion complete, Baylor won’t play against until its exhibition opener against the Houston Jaguars on Nov. 3. The Lady Bears open their regular season Nov. 17 at home against Florida Atlantic.
