It took a school-record five runners in the top 15 spots, but the Baylor women’s cross country team received an automatic — and seventh straight — bid to the NCAA national meet with its second-place, 54-point finish Saturday at the NCAA South Central Regional Championship at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. “We’ve got three All-Americans and they know how to run, how to fight. We needed five girls to make the top 15 today,” coach Todd Harbour said. Struggling with the flu, poor times and other ailments all year, the squad had fallen short of preseason expectations. The Lady Bears finished seventh in the Big 12 Championships, which fell far short of a necessary strong performance for an at-large bid to the national championship.

Waco’s Cottonwood Creek Golf Course is like a second home to Todd Harbour. It’s not that the Baylor cross country coach hits the links very often — his busy schedule doesn’t permit him that luxury. But Harbour has presided over plenty of cross country meets at the golf course, and as such knows nearly every divot. For the second year in a row and sixth time in seven years, Cottonwood will play host to the NCAA South Central Regional Championships today.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Baylor senior Erin Bedell charged to all-Big 12 recognition for the third time in her career, but her teammates couldn’t maintain the same pace, as the 26th-ranked BU women finished a disappointing seventh at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships a year after placing second. “We are disappointed in the results, but not in the effort. We fought pretty hard today,” Baylor coach Todd Harbour said. “We got out in the race, but just didn’t hold onto it.” Bedell finished eighth, covering the 6K course in 21:44.91. She was the only Baylor runner to record all-conference honors, as Baylor’s next-highest finisher was Nichole Jones in 25th at 22:25.66.

Perhaps more so than usual, there appears to be a pack mentality at the top of the Big 12 cross country heap, with several good teams bunched together. Baylor coach Todd Harbour hopes his women’s team can squeeze out of that pack and capture a Big 12 championship. Baylor’s 26th-ranked women and unranked men will make their chase at glory today when the Big 12 Cross Country Championships get under way at the A.L. Gustin Golf Course in Columbia, Mo.

Hoping for no less than a top-five finish, the Baylor cross country team lagged far behind that goal Saturday in finishing 20th at the NCAA Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind. The 12th-ranked Bears, the fifth-highest ranked team in the meet, were led by a 12th-place finish from senior Erin Bedell (20:59.9). But Baylor couldn’t get anyone close enough to Bedell’s heels to contend, as Nichole Jones finished 42nd at 21:31.1 and Danielle Bradley came in 111th at 22:17. The Bears were without two of their top runners, Leigh Ann Ganzar and Stephanie Morgan, due to illness.

The Baylor men’s and women’s cross country teams will venture off in different directions today for a pair of meets. The 12th-ranked Baylor women will travel to the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., site of the national meet in November. The meet is divided into two races, with Baylor competing against the arguably tougher field, with 10 other top-30 programs. The field includes four teams ranked ahead of Baylor — No. 1 Washington, No. 5 Princeton, No. 8 Minnesota and No. 9 Florida. “It’s always some nice to get some wins over some teams that are going to be at the NCAA meet,” BU coach Todd Harbour said.

STANFORD, Calif. — Behind Robbie Knorr’s sixth-place effort, the Baylor men’s cross country team ran to an eighth-place showing at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. The meet featured some of the top men’s teams in the nation, but Knorr more than rose to the challenge. Clinging to a pack of Stanford runners, Knorr completed the 8-kilometer course in a time of 24:15, just 21 seconds off the lead. Fellow BU junior Jeff Sadler finished 21st at 24:52, while sophomore Zac Flowers came in 65th at 25:52.

The Baylor men’s cross country team will journey west today for the Stanford Invitational, its first action since the season-opening Baylor Twilight Invitational on Sept. 4. “We’re anxious to see where we really are,” BU assistant coach Jon Capron said. “Stanford puts on a great meet with good competition at every level.” At their home opener meet, juniors Robbie Knorr and Jeff Sadler finished 1-2 in times of 18:48.2 and 18:56.2, respectively. The Stanford course is one the Bears are familiar with after racing to an 11th-place team finish at that meet last year.

On most cross country squads, there is a clear, definitive No. 1 runner, one leader of the pack. Baylor’s women don’t have that — and they don’t care. “With maturity, we’ve had a different kind of pushing of one another,” said Baylor coach Todd Harbour, whose Lady Bears open the season at the Baylor Twilight Invitational tonight. “I think the girls have come to the place where they just really want to have a good team. Everybody likes to be No. 1, but you could have a different No. 1 every week on this team, and I think the ladies are fine with that.”

As expected, the 18th-ranked Baylor women’s cross country team is bound for nationals. On Monday, the NCAA awarded Baylor one of 13 at-large berths for the national meet, which is scheduled for Sunday in Terre Haute, Ind. In the regional meet this past Saturday at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course, Baylor finished in a tie for second place with Rice, but lost a chance to get an automatic NCAA berth on a tiebreaker. The trip to the NCAA meet will be Baylor’s sixth in a row and 12th overall in school history.
