It’s rivalry time for the 17th-ranked Baylor volleyball team, which hosts Texas A&M at 7 tonight with a six-match winning streak on the line. Baylor (17-1, 6-1) has swept its last five opponents and has won 18 of 22 sets in Big 12 competition. The Bears are coming off a sweep of Texas Tech in Lubbock on Wednesday in which they registered a .309 attacking percentage. Texas A&M (11-3, 4-2) is just a game behind Baylor in the loss column, and the Aggies have shown an ability to knock off ranked foes, including a 3-1 win over then-No. 6 Nebraska on Sept. 23.

HOUSTON — The Baylor volleyball team dished up some service with a smile Saturday, remaining undefeated on the season. Baylor dusted New Orleans in three games, 25-20, 26-24, 25-21, to close out a perfect opening weekend at the Flo Hyman Invitational at the University of Houston. “As a team we served much better today,” BU coach Jim Barnes said. “Taylor (Barnes) and Anna (Breyfogle) gave us some especially good serves. There is no doubt we outserved and outpassed them.”

Over the past two seasons, the Baylor volleyball team has experienced the pain of running smack dab into a wall. In both 2007 and 2008, the team’s early success was wiped out by late swoons in Big 12 play. Last year, the Lady Bears burst out to an 11-2 start, including a program-best 3-0 mark in Big 12 action, before the wall made its appearance. Baylor lost eight of its next 11 matches on its way to its seventh straight season without an NCAA tournament appearance. As the 2009 season dawns, the Lady Bears are confident that string of disappointment is about to end. Forget clearing the wall, they’re planning on plowing right through it, like a wrecking ball.

Baylor seniors Taylor Barnes and Anna Breyfogle have been selected to the preseason All-Big 12 volleyball team for the second straight year. Barnes, a setter from Arlington, led the Big 12 in service aces last season and ranked fourth in assists per set (10.32). Breyfogle, a middle blocker from Buda, led the conference and ranked seventh in the nation in blocks per set (1.45) despite missing six matches to illness and injury. Coming off an 18-13 season, the Bears were picked fifth in the preseason coaches poll, just five points behind fourth-place Texas A&M. Texas, led by preseason Big 12 player of the year Destinee Hooker, is the coaches’ favorite as league champion.

Baylor junior volleyball players Taylor Barnes and Anna Breyfogle were both honored as first-team all-Big 12 performers, the league office announced Monday. The conference honors were the result of a vote of the league’s head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players. The awards are the first-ever for both Barnes and Breyfogle, who were each named to the preseason all-Big 12 team. It’s Baylor’s first selection to the all-Big 12 first team since Stevie Nicholas earned that distinction in 2001, and the first time BU has had two players honored since 1999, when Elisha Polk and Kia Young made the cut. Barnes played in all 114 sets of BU’s 31 matches this season, leading the Bears with a .329 hitting percentage and 1,176 assists. She also used her powerful jump serve to register a conference-leading 49 aces.

Baylor closed its season Saturday at home with a 3-1 loss to perennial power Nebraska, one of four Big 12 teams that did advance to the tournament, along with Texas, Kansas State and Texas A&M. Baylor will graduate only defensive specialist Mandy Elliott off this year’s team.

LUBBOCK — Behind Katie Sanders’ 12th double-double of the year, the Baylor volleyball team rallied past Texas Tech, 19-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-14, 15-13, Wednesday night at the United Spirit Arena. It marks the eighth straight win over Tech for Baylor (17-11, 8-9), but the Bears certainly had to work for it. After dropping two of the first three sets, Baylor came out smoking in the fourth. After a 2-2 start, Baylor ran off 12 of the next 15 points to build a 14-5 lead. The Bears carried that momentum into the decisive fifth set, winning a tight battle on a final service error by the Lady Raiders.
