The quarterback on Baylor’s 1980 Southwest Championship football team and one of the baseball program’s most heralded stars highlight the newest class of inductees to the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame, which was announced Monday. Jay Jeffrey, who was the SWC’s Newcomer of the Year as a junior in 1980, and Jason Jennings, the first consensus national player of the year in Division I baseball history, lead a class that also includes Charles Benson and Frank Ditta (football), Billy Hollis (men’s track and field) and Stacey Smith (women’s track and field). In addition, former Baylor basketball star Dr. Gerald D. Cobb will join the Hall of Fame’s Wall of Honor. A teammate of Benson and Ditta, Jeffrey earned a pair of letters in football and two more in baseball. In 1981, he became only the fifth BU quarterback to throw for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons, finishing with 1,643 yards and nine touchdown passes that year. He still holds the Baylor school record for longest run from scrimmage, on an 83-yard TD scamper versus Lamar in 1980.

BERLIN — Defending world champion Jeremy Wariner and Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt left little doubt the U.S. could count on another gold in Friday’s 400 final, firing each other up for another battle for one-lap supremacy. Wariner, a former Baylor all-American, had dominated the distance since the Athens Games in 2004, but Merritt upset him at the Beijing Games last year to take Olympic gold. Merritt looked at the stadium clock to make sure of winning his semifinal heat and still set a world leading time of 44.37 seconds. Wariner coasted to a 44.69.

This isn’t a prodigal son story, not exactly. Although former Baylor national champion and Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner has returned to the tutelage of quarter-mile guru Clyde Hart, it’s more of a mended relationship. Because Hart wasn’t standing at the gate waiting for Wariner to come home. And, as for the fatted calf, well that would have to mean Wariner returning to his former place as No. 1 in the world in the 400-meter dash.

Baylor’s Tiffany Townsend didn’t waste any time ascending to elite college track and field status. As a freshman a year ago, Townsend claimed multiple all-American honors while sprinting into the final heat at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships in the 200-meter dash and anchoring the Bears’ bronze-medal winning 4x100 relay.
Around here, a track coach doesn’t exactly bump into a great javelin thrower just walking down the street every day. In fact, Baylor assistant track coach Danny Brabham had to fly to a far corner of the United States, then hop in a rental car and go driving through rural Washington state to find one. Brabham successfully recruited current Baylor sophomore Nick Lyons, who heads to the NCAA Midwest Regional this weekend in Norman, Okla., with a chance of advancing to nationals.
