WASHINGTON — Andy Roddick showed little rust following a monthlong break. The top-seeded Roddick beat former Baylor all-American Benjamin Becker, 6-3, 6-2, on Wednesday at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, his first match since losing the Wimbledon final to Roger Federer on July 5. Roddick took the extended break to recover from a right hip flexor injury sustained in that match, an ailment he said has healed. He had a few errant shots go long or wide, but controlled the match throughout, never facing a break point. He had eight aces — including the match winner — without a double-fault, but still pointed to his service game as the area that needs improvement.

The Baylor men’s tennis team hired Chris Brandi as an assistant coach Monday. Brandi comes to Baylor after serving as an assistant at Wake Forest last season and replaces Kyle Spencer, who was named head tennis coach at Maryland. “Baylor tennis is proud to welcome Chris Brandi to our tennis family,” Baylor coach Matt Knoll said. “He will be a tremendous addition to our program. I wasn’t able to convince him to join us after he visited Baylor as a high school prospect in 2001 so it’s gratifying that I was able to get him here as a coach in 2009. His pedigree in coaching is special as is his passion for the game and love for his players. He’ll make everyone here better this year.”

They did a good job to get back into the first set. But at this stage, you just can’t put yourself in that position.”
