Baylor coach Glenn Moore will watch the Women’s College World Series tonight on TV, but he’d rather be there in the coaching box. The Lady Bears came close to making it to Oklahoma City for the second time in three years before losing to No. 5 national seed Michigan last weekend in the Super Regional in Ann Arbor. With a little tweaking, Baylor could make another push for the World Series next year.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — With ace Whitney Canion out with an ailing left arm, the Baylor softball team’s remarkable run ended with a crash at the Super Regional. Angela Findlay collected two doubles and three RBIs as No. 5 national seed Michigan romped to a 7-1 win over the Lady Bears Saturday afternoon to complete a two-game sweep and earn a spot in the World Series. Riding Jordan Taylor’s 13-strikeout pitching, the Wolverines (46-10) advanced to the World Series for the first time since winning the 2005 national championship. They also got revenge against a Baylor program that knocked them off in the 2007 Super Regional at Getterman Stadium to reach the first World Series in school history.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — There isn’t a much scarier sight than Michigan slugger Dorian Shaw standing at the plate ready to unload. Shaw blasted three homers and collected six RBIs as No. 5 national seed Michigan blew away Baylor, 8-1, Friday night in the opening game of the Super Regional before 1,955 fans at the Wilpon Softball Complex. The Wolverines (45-10) need to beat the Lady Bears (40-21) once today at 1:30 p.m. to advance to their first World Series since winning the 2005 national title. Baylor has to beat the Wolverines twice today to get to the World Series Thursday in Oklahoma City.

Hoping to drum up some recruiting interest, Smithson Valley outfielder Megan Turk sent a video of her crashing through a fence to Baylor softball coach Glenn Moore. Turk ripped her jersey and didn’t catch the foul ball, but her hustle left an impression on Moore. “There’s some kids who don’t want to get dirty,” Moore said. “But when you see a kid run through a chain link fence, it catches your eye.
When Baylor ace Whitney Canion ended her bullpen session before Sunday’s regional championship game, she wore a broad smile on her face. Her arm felt lively and loose, and she appeared ready to throw a gem. “Whitney’s whole demeanor looked different,” Baylor catcher Courtney Oberg said. “It was like the pressure was off.
When Whitney Canion stepped in the circle for the first time, the freshman knew Baylor’s hopes for a comeback season were riding on her powerful left arm. After their first World Series appearance in school history, the Lady Bears’ softball team finished a dispiriting eighth in the Big 12 in 2008. The biggest reason for Baylor’s fall was ineffective pitching, and coach Glenn Moore made it clear that Canion had to deliver. Canion hasn’t just been Baylor’s ace, she’s arguably been the best pitcher in the Big 12.
