Playing its third game in four days, Baylor had enough left in the tank to blow out to a 22-point halftime lead over Southern on Monday night. The Bears looked like they were running on fumes in the final 20 minutes, but Southern had already dug too big a hole to make a serious run. Baylor’s 61-45 win over the Jaguars was no masterpiece, but it got the job done before 5,093 fans at the Ferrell Center.

One era is gone, and the next one begins. Baylor coach Scott Drew built his program with a recruiting class featuring Curtis Jerrells, Kevin Rogers and Henry Dugat, who led the Bears to an NCAA tournament appearance in 2008 and a run to the NIT championship game at Madison Square Garden last season. Now that all three players have graduated, Drew will remodel his basketball team.

Recruited by major colleges across the country, Duncanville High School senior center Perry Jones kept a promise to Baylor that he made as a freshman. On Wednesday, Jones signed a national letter of intent with the Bears to become the highest-rated recruit in the history of the men’s basketball program. The 6-10, 220-pound Jones is ranked No. 3 nationally by ESPNU, No. 4 by Scout.com, and No. 6 by Rivals.com. Baylor also signed Bakari Turner, a 6-3 senior guard from Plano West High School who was Jones’ AAU basketball teammate on the Dallas Seawolves.

After Kansas won the 2008 national title, the starting lineup evacuated like a hurricane hit Lawrence. Stars like Brandon Rush, Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur moved on to the NBA, leaving Jayhawks coach Bill Self with a considerable rebuilding project. Guess what? That rebuilding project is complete, and the Jayhawks will shoot for their second national title in three years.

The quarterback on Baylor’s 1980 Southwest Championship football team and one of the baseball program’s most heralded stars highlight the newest class of inductees to the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame, which was announced Monday. Jay Jeffrey, who was the SWC’s Newcomer of the Year as a junior in 1980, and Jason Jennings, the first consensus national player of the year in Division I baseball history, lead a class that also includes Charles Benson and Frank Ditta (football), Billy Hollis (men’s track and field) and Stacey Smith (women’s track and field). In addition, former Baylor basketball star Dr. Gerald D. Cobb will join the Hall of Fame’s Wall of Honor. A teammate of Benson and Ditta, Jeffrey earned a pair of letters in football and two more in baseball. In 1981, he became only the fifth BU quarterback to throw for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons, finishing with 1,643 yards and nine touchdown passes that year. He still holds the Baylor school record for longest run from scrimmage, on an 83-yard TD scamper versus Lamar in 1980.
